Street Fighter originally focused on simple street fights between skilled martial artists. While characters like Ryu had special moves, the core idea was a contest of fighting ability. Over time, the series introduced fighters with much stranger origins – some created by dangerous experiments, others with powers rooted in divine forces – resulting in increasingly spectacular and frightening abilities.
It’s always a little weird to me watching these Street Fighter characters brawl one-on-one. Like, most of them could probably wipe out a whole army if they really wanted to! But hey, that’s part of what makes the series so awesome, right? So, let’s jump in and take a look at who’s got the craziest fighting styles.
We’re looking at characters with clearly defined superpowers, based on official game stories and related information. And this isn’t a ranking – trying to compare the power levels of fighting game characters is just not productive.
10. Ryu
Pure Progress in Motion
Let’s start by acknowledging Ryu, the original hero and face of Street Fighter. From the very beginning, he’s been a fighting machine, always looking for new opponents to help him hone his skills and become a stronger martial artist.
Ryu is a martial artist who practices Ansatsuken, a fighting style originally developed for assassination. However, those who master Ansatsuken can unlock a special ability called the Power of Nothingness – an inner energy fueled by a desire for self-improvement. For years, Ryu trained to perfect his skills, fighting against the dangerous, destructive impulses within Ansatsuken known as the Satsui no Hado. He finally achieved the Power of Nothingness in Street Fighter V.
Ryu is now considered one of the most powerful fighters in the world, thanks to Street Fighter 6. Despite already being incredibly skilled, he’s always striving to get better – not to defeat others, but because he genuinely loves the challenge and self-improvement. He’s physically strong and completely at peace with himself, and that’s true strength if anything is.
9. Gouken
A Teacher of Legends
Ryu’s martial arts training began with Gouken, a highly skilled master. Gouken was the brother of Akuma, and both had initially learned from their teacher, Goutetsu. While Akuma embraced the brutal, destructive side of their fighting style, Gouken aimed to remove its violent tendencies. He transformed the art – originally designed for lethal combat – into a practice focused on self-improvement and defense, making it suitable for everyday use.
Gouken first appeared in a Street Fighter II manga that detailed the backstories of Ryu and Ken, including how he adopted Ryu and began training Ken at the request of Ken’s father. While Ryu and Ken were away on their journeys, Gouken was attacked by Akuma in a violent fight, leaving him severely injured.
Everyone thought Gouken had died – his students even held a funeral for him. But he actually survived Akuma’s attack and incredibly came back to life. Instead of seeking revenge, he simply checked in on Ryu and Ken, proving he was remarkably calm and collected.
8. Oro
The Whimsical Hermit
There’s an old saying about being careful around people in dangerous professions, especially if they live a long time. This definitely applies to Oro, a character from Street Fighter who’s over 140 years old and remarkably energetic. First appearing in Street Fighter III, Oro is a reclusive master of Senjutsu, a unique martial art inspired by Taoism that seems to have also given him the secret to an incredibly long life.
When Oro first appeared, he always kept his right arm hidden inside his clothing, leading people to believe he’d be an incredibly powerful fighter if he could use both arms. In Street Fighter V, he still keeps his arm bound, but now he also carries a turtle with him – both as a self-imposed challenge and because he enjoys the company.
Even though Oro looks intimidating and is incredibly strong, he’s actually a kind person. He spends his time helping those who get lost in the Amazon, enjoys going to the movies, and is close friends with Dhalsim, often meeting him for meals. He’s eager to find someone to teach his fighting style to, but his training is so demanding that no one can stick with it. It’s important to remember he’s been practicing for over a hundred years.
7. Necalli
An Ancient Devourer
Although Oro is the oldest human character in the Street Fighter series, a few others have existed for a longer time, in a sense. One of the most enigmatic is Necalli, a fierce warrior who first appeared in Street Fighter V.
Necalli is described as a messenger of the gods, an Aztec warrior who has shown up throughout history whenever strong fighters clashed. Since the Aztecs existed from 1300 to 1521 AD, that makes Necalli roughly 500 to 700 years old. Despite his age, he looks fantastic and still has a lot of energy.
Necalli actively seeks out strong opponents, aiming to defeat and “devour” them – taking not just their power and soul, but potentially even consuming their bodies. His motivations remain a mystery, but he’s clearly a formidable fighter, becoming even more dangerous when his hair and face begin to glow. He especially targets those with supernatural abilities, like M. Bison, Dhalsim, Ryu, and Nash.
6. G
The President of Earth (Self-Proclaimed)
I’ve always loved how Street Fighter loves to throw in these really weird, unique characters, give you a tiny glimpse into their story, and then… just leave it at that! They never really explain anything more. Q and Hakan are classic examples, but for me, G from Street Fighter V is the best. He’s just so out there, and they never touched on his backstory again, which is kind of amazing.
G calls himself the “President of Earth,” but nobody – not even within the story – understands what that actually means. He unexpectedly started appearing in public livestreams, enthusiastically praising humanity and the planet. He’d seem like just another eccentric person if he didn’t also have amazing powers to control the earth, and strange golden markings on his skin.
The show hasn’t directly revealed what G is, but I think he’s likely a representation of the Earth itself – maybe ‘G’ stands for ‘Gaia.’ He’s incredibly calm, even when facing the show’s biggest villains, seeing them as simply misguided. This either means he’s completely detached from reality, or truly powerful enough that they aren’t a real threat to him.
5. Seth
Science’s Greatest S.I.N.
Most of Street Fighter’s strongest fighters have supernatural abilities, but not all of them do. Some are created through science – specifically, deeply unethical scientific experiments. A prime example is Seth from Street Fighter IV, a powerful android built from scratch to be the ultimate warrior.
Seth began as a clone created by Shadaloo as a potential body for M. Bison. However, he unexpectedly developed his own consciousness and took control of Shadaloo’s weapons development group, S.I.N. He possesses the genetic memories of numerous fighters, enabling him to copy their signature moves, such as Dhalsim’s stretching or Guile’s Sonic Boom. Beyond that, he has unique abilities of his own, most notably a device called the Tanden Engine which allows him to create an endless supply of energy.
Seth was initially defeated at the conclusion of Street Fighter IV’s story. However, he made a comeback in Street Fighter V: Champion Edition by being reborn into one of Shadaloo’s experimental doll bodies. This explains his current, more feminine build, even though Seth doesn’t actually have a gender.
4. Ingrid
Messenger from Beyond the Stars
It should be obvious by now that strong fighters in Street Fighter tend to draw even stronger opponents to them. This attraction is so powerful, it even brings in fighters from other worlds – like Ingrid, who first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max.
It’s not entirely clear what Ingrid is doing on Earth, but she seems to be a very powerful, possibly cosmic, being on a mission to find something. If she fails, the consequences could be severe. Like G, she doesn’t look particularly imposing, but she possesses significant power and won’t hesitate to use it.
Ingrid doesn’t follow any traditional fighting style. She mixes ballet, energy blasts, and playful tricks to mess with her opponents. She doesn’t seem to take fights seriously – she’s more interested in having fun than actually trying hard. Once, she casually told Rose she could defeat M. Bison in fifteen minutes, and then she actually did.
3. Gill
Leader of the Illuminati
Shadaloo is the most frequently encountered villainous group in Street Fighter, but it’s not the only one. The storyline of Street Fighter III focuses heavily on a different organization called the Secret Society, led by the mysterious Gill.

Gill grew up in a family deeply involved with the Secret Society and quickly became a prominent member. As an adult, he became president, but his brother, Urien, later challenged and defeated him for the role. Despite losing the presidency, Gill was so influential within the Society that they created a new, higher position just for him, much to Urien’s displeasure.
As a child, Gill was heavily modified genetically, giving him a flawless physique and the ability to control both fire and ice. Even more remarkably, he seems to be immortal. In the game’s story, he survived a devastating attack from Akuma without injury. This immortality is also reflected in the gameplay – after defeating him at the end of an Street Fighter III arcade mode run, his health instantly refills, forcing you to fight him again.
2. Kage
One Bad Day
I mentioned Ryu’s battle with the Satsui no Hado earlier. Basically, it’s a powerful, dark impulse – the urge to hurt others, amplified by a dangerous fighting style. It’s pure, uncontrolled rage that everyone has a little bit of inside them. If Ryu were to fully give in to that power, he would become Kage.
Kage started as an idea for a Street Fighter Alpha 2 character, imagining what would happen if Ryu embraced darkness like Akuma. Originally called “Evil Ryu,” the concept explored Ryu giving in to violent impulses. Later, in Street Fighter V, after Ryu overcame his inner darkness, this persona became a separate, physical character. Now known as Kagenaru Mono, or simply Kage, he exists as a dark reflection of Ryu.
Kage embodies Ryu’s raw power, stripped of his compassion and restraint – representing the ultimate potential of the Ansatsuken fighting style that Akuma tried to unlock within him. As a manifestation of the Satsui no Hado, Kage is an incredibly formidable opponent, but his words suggest his existence is temporary and relies on possessing a human host.
1. Oni
One Really Bad Day
If Ryu, a normally calm person, could be corrupted into a destructive force by the Satsui no Hado, it’s terrifying to think what would happen to someone like Akuma if he experienced the same thing. Akuma has dedicated his life to becoming incredibly powerful and ruthless, barely holding onto his own identity. If that final bit of self-control were lost, Akuma wouldn’t just change – he’d be completely consumed, and a monstrous demon would take his place.
Oni is a fictional character who first appeared in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. He represents what Akuma would become if he fully succumbed to the Satsui no Hado, a dark and destructive force. In this form, Oni has lost all humanity and skill as a martial artist, becoming a being of pure malice, violence, and hatred. He simply wants to crush everything beneath him.
Akuma follows the traditional fighting style of Ansatsuken, but Oni doesn’t bother with any of that. He simply attacks with overwhelming force, throwing fireballs and lightning without restraint. Thankfully, Oni isn’t part of the main storyline, because if he were real, he could cause a catastrophe.
