An explosion near Downsview Park in North York caused a stir online when residents across Toronto reported seeing an orange flash, hearing loud noises, and feeling their windows rattle. Police later clarified that the event was actually a planned explosion for a movie being filmed.

Downsview Park previously informed residents that they might experience loud sounds, bright lights, or smoke this week. This is due to a planned activity that has been coordinated with the police and fire departments.

Drake confirms explosion was part of music video

A filming notice posted online revealed the production is codenamed “PROJECT BOT.” It stated that special effects using pyrotechnics would be filmed behind 17 Carl Hall Rd on April 16th, starting after 6 PM and finishing around 11 PM.

Reddit users on r/toronto and r/askTO shared widespread confusion following the incident, describing a large fireball, shaking houses, and drivers pulling over on the highway to investigate.

Drake seemed to confirm the rumors by sharing articles about the incident on his Instagram Story late last night.

Investigators have connected the explosion to a music video being filmed for Toronto rapper Drake’s new project, called ‘Iceman.’ As of now, Drake’s team hasn’t released a complete statement about the incident.

Downsview Park released another apology on April 17th, acknowledging the upset caused by a recent film shoot. They explained that their initial communication hadn’t reached everyone who was impacted. The park also confirmed that the Toronto Police and Fire Services were present during the shoot and ensured there was no danger to the public.
