Man in giant cannabis mascot costume detained by police at Hyde Park 420 rally

Police briefly held a man dressed as a large cannabis plant at London’s Hyde Park 420 rally. Officers intervened at the event, which took place on April 20th and hadn’t been officially approved.

Video of the event shows a person dressed in a costume being guided by multiple Metropolitan Police officers through the park. They were then led to a blue police tent that had been set up at the location.

The Hyde Park 420 rally is a yearly event on April 20th where people gather near Speakers’ Corner to advocate for the legalization of cannabis and celebrate cannabis culture.

The Royal Parks has consistently stated that this event is not authorized to occur in Hyde Park and violates park rules. Before this year’s rally, officials reiterated that anyone attending could face legal consequences, including arrest.

Police crack down on Hyde Park 420 celebration

Before the event, the Metropolitan Police announced they would take a firm stance. They stated officers would step in if needed, enforce drug laws, and have a highly visible presence in Hyde Park.

The official Hyde Park website posted a notice on April 16, 2026, stating that a 420 Day rally was anticipated in the park.

The situation seems similar to what happened this year, where police mainly targeted prominent people at the event. A photo of officers escorting a large weed costume through the park went viral, but the reason for the person inside being detained hasn’t been officially explained.

The yearly cannabis rally is now a well-known event in the UK, combining protest with music, costumes, and the customary 4:20 p.m. group smoke. However, officials have recently clarified that it’s not considered a festival, and Royal Parks has specifically banned amplified music, gazebos, and stages.
