Square Enix is releasing a new board game based on Final Fantasy VII called Final Fantasy VII: Ascend the Shinra Tower. You can now pre-order the game from their Japanese online store, where it will be available starting November 6th for ¥4,400.

This new board game draws heavily from the gameplay of Arclight Games’ Cat and the Tower, and Square Enix is working directly with Arclight to create this version based on Final Fantasy VII.

This cooperative board game challenges players to help Cloud Strife ascend the Shinra Tower. Players work together to build the tower, but it becomes increasingly unstable as it grows taller. They must strategically add wooden blocks to keep it balanced and prevent it from collapsing.

You win the game if Cloud makes it to the 8th floor before the tower falls. A full game should take about 15 to 30 minutes.

I’m so excited about this board game! The instructions will be in Japanese, but also in English, French, and German, which is awesome because my friends and I speak all those languages. The game itself comes with a ton of stuff – 20 floor tiles, 54 wall pieces, and 24 action cards. It sounds like it’s going to be a really involved and fun game!

The set includes 24 wooden blocks featuring characters from the game, including the hero Cloud, his allies Tifa, Aerith, and Barret, and members of the Avalanche group like Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge. You’ll also find the villain Sephiroth, Shinra executives Rufus and Reno, and even some regular Shinra soldiers and mechs.

Square Enix will release a new board game, ASCEND THE SHINRA TOWER – FINAL FANTASY VII Board Game, in January 2027. Created in partnership with Tokyo-based Arclight, Inc., this cooperative game challenges players to work together using characters and stories from the beloved FINAL FANTASY VII video game, all on a unique balance board.

This exciting cooperative game, based on FINAL FANTASY VII, challenges you and your team to climb the wobbly Shinra Tower together. You’ll build the tower upwards, one level at a time, by stacking floor pieces on top of wall pieces of different heights. But be careful – as the tower gets taller, it starts to lean and become more unstable!

Working together and openly discussing ideas are essential for succeeding in this collaborative task.

As Cloud climbs the Shinra Tower, he’ll face a series of enemies. Team up with your allies to defeat them and help Cloud reach the 8th floor to save the tower and win. But be warned – even after that, one final challenge remains!

Will you be able to overcome your nemesis Sephiroth and save the planet from crisis?

Tetsuya Nomura, the original creator of the characters and story for FINAL FANTASY VII, personally oversees all new artwork used on the game’s packaging and wooden pieces.

The world of FINAL FANTASY VII comes to life in this board game with beautifully illustrated, storybook-style pieces. Familiar faces like Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith, along with their enemies, are all reimagined with charming artwork.
