In the first Practical Magic movie, things didn’t turn out well for the men the Owens sisters, Sally and Gilly, met, so I was a little worried when Lee Pace appeared in the trailer for the long-awaited sequel. Practical Magic 2—a simple title, which is good—is based on Alice Hoffman’s sequel novel, The Book of Magic, and continues the story a few years after the original. Sally, Gilly, and their aunts (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest) are still up to their magical antics in the trailer. We also meet a new generation of potential witches, including Sally’s daughter (Joey King) and another young woman played by Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones. Whether she’s Gilly’s daughter remains a mystery for now.

As with many continuations of older stories, the younger characters are causing trouble for the original cast, leading the Owens sisters to leave Massachusetts for England (and partly because current tax incentives are encouraging filming in the U.K.). Lee Pace returns, and hopefully, his character will have a better fate than the male leads in the first movie. Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 11, 2026.
