Steven Spielberg’s 2005 science fiction film is coming to Hulu. It’s the second time the famous director has worked with Tom Cruise, and the movie tells the story of a father trying to save his children when aliens attack Earth.
War of the Worlds releases on Hulu next month
War of the Worlds lands on Hulu’s platform on Friday, May 1, 2026 (via Hulu).
This movie is an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic 1898 science fiction novel. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman, known for his work on ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Foundation,’ and David Koepp, who wrote ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Spider-Man’.
H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds tells the story of a Martian invasion of Earth. Facing the destruction of their own planet, the technologically advanced Martians arrive to conquer ours. The story follows Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker, as he struggles to keep his children, Rachel and Robbie, safe when the invasion unexpectedly begins.
Spielberg’s movie version of the story updates several details to fit a contemporary setting. The book takes place in 1890s England, but the film is set in 21st-century New York. While the book is told by an anonymous narrator, the movie shows the invasion happening in real-time, focusing on the experiences of a character named Ray. The film also shifts some of the story’s themes and overall mood.
The film stars Tom Cruise as Ray, alongside Dakota Fanning as Rachel, Miranda Otto as Mary Ann, Tim Robbins as Harlan, and Justin Chatwin as Robbie. Rick Gonzalez and Yul Vazquez also appear in the cast, among other talented actors.
War of the Worlds came out on June 29, 2005, and received generally positive reviews from critics, who gave it a 76% rating. Viewers, however, weren’t as enthusiastic, giving it a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the differing opinions, the movie was a huge box office hit.
The movie cost around $120 million to make and earned over $603.8 million worldwide in theaters. It was also recognized by the Academy Awards with nominations for Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects.
Good news for sci-fi fans! Not only is War of the Worlds hitting the streaming service, but I’m also excited to see Minority Report, another fantastic collaboration between Spielberg and Cruise, is joining it. Definitely worth a re-watch, or a first watch if you somehow missed it!
