Witness describes search efforts after swimmer went under

Shawn McDonald, a volunteer, reported on Facebook that 38-year-old Flávia went underwater and disappeared soon after the race started. Lifeguards and other racers immediately alerted authorities when they noticed she was missing.

At the beginning of the race, we paddled next to the swimmers, ready to help if needed. Then, a whistle blew, and we realized someone was in trouble. We saw swimmers holding onto their kayaks and heard them shout that another swimmer had gone underwater, according to McDonald.

McDonald explained he swam into the water to look for the athlete, diving multiple times over an hour until the dive team found her body around 9 a.m. local time.

Flávia gained over 60,000 followers on Instagram by sharing her triathlon journey and training. Before becoming an endurance athlete, she had a career in radio and TV, following her journalism degree, as reported by O Dia in Brazil.
