The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be closer to finally seeing Deadpool back, but with a catch.
Ryan Reynolds recently discussed Deadpool’s future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on Sunday Sitdown Live. While Deadpool & Wolverine earned over $1.3 billion globally – making it a huge success within Marvel’s Multiverse Saga – Reynolds suggested he may not lead another solo film. He revealed he has some ideas written, but believes Deadpool works best as a supporting character within a team, rather than the central focus.
This news arrives almost a year after reports surfaced that Ryan Reynolds was beginning to develop a movie uniting Deadpool with the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter on May 2, 2025, Reynolds was “secretly planning to reprise the role,” but in a different way. The report indicated he was “working on several ideas for a team-up movie with three or four X-Men,” with Deadpool playing a supporting role.
Many fans believe Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming movie will be based on X-Force, a team he first started developing while at 20th Century Fox, before Disney acquired Marvel. However, Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced what the film is about. They haven’t hired a director or set a release date, so the project is still in early stages. It’s possible the movie won’t happen if they can’t finalize the script.
Although Ryan Reynolds has hinted that Deadpool 4 is unlikely, Wade Wilson could still appear in future Marvel projects. Marvel is currently working on a reboot of the X-Men franchise, directed by Jake Schreier, and plans to feature mutants more prominently after Avengers: Secret Wars. According to Kevin Feige, this will lead to a fresh start for the superhero universe. Instead of making a fourth Deadpool movie, it’s more probable they’ll integrate Deadpool into the MCU’s new version of the X-Men in some capacity.
Now that Marvel has announced their plans for the X-Men, we can likely expect news about Ryan Reynolds returning as Deadpool soon. Considering how popular Deadpool has been, it’s unlikely Marvel will keep him out of the movies for very long. Since we haven’t heard anything about Phase 7 yet, Deadpool’s next adventure could be a major surprise Marvel is still holding back, potentially including the details of his upcoming project.
The next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie will be Spider-Man: Brand New Day, coming out on July 31st, followed by Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th. Although there’s been a lot of talk about Ryan Reynolds appearing as Deadpool in a team-up movie planned for late 2026, Reynolds has repeatedly said he wasn’t involved in filming it.
