Nurburgring Qualifiers race canceled after fatal seven-car crash kills 66-year-old racer

Veteran driver Juha Miettinen tragically died in a crash during qualifying for the ADAC 24h Nurburgring race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife on Saturday, April 18th.

As a fan, it was really scary when the race got stopped. Turns out seven cars were involved in a crash! Thankfully, officials said the other six drivers were checked out and none of them were seriously hurt, which is a huge relief. They ended up canceling the rest of the race for the day, but honestly, safety comes first.

The four-hour race was halted about 25 minutes in due to a large crash in the Klostertal part of the track.

Juha Miettinen, driving the BMW 325i with race number 121, sadly passed away at the Nürburgring’s Medical Center. Despite efforts to revive him after he was removed from the car, he could not be saved, according to an official race announcement.

Okay, so after that crazy incident, Race Control just announced the cars that were tangled up. It was the #27 Aston Martin, both #111 and #121 BMWs, the #410 and #448 Porsches, a #503 Toyota Supra, and finally the #992 Porsche. What a mess!

Miettinen and Dan Berghult were entered in the #121 Keevin Motorsport BMW for the weekend.

Although officials haven’t yet determined the exact cause of the crash, initial reports indicate that oil or another fluid on the track may have caused the multi-car incident in a particularly fast section of the Nordschleife. As of now, race officials haven’t verified this explanation.

Miettinen was a frequent and skilled driver at the Nordschleife, recently finishing among the leaders in the BMW 325i class during NLS races. Because NLS events are only stopped for severe weather or major safety issues, observers immediately understood the accident was serious when the race was halted.

Race officials announced that Saturday’s race was canceled and will not be resumed. They also stated that a moment of silence will be observed before the start of Sunday’s race at 1:00 p.m. local time.
