The University of Calgary made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the biggest dinosaur costume gathering! They officially have the largest group of people ever assembled dressed as dinosaurs.
The university celebrated its 60th anniversary with a huge event on campus. Students, professors, and community members dressed in prehistoric costumes, and the crowd was much larger than expected! A record-breaking 682 people attended, surpassing the previous high of 468.
Vice-provost Verity Turpin described how the crowd instantly burst into cheers and the song “We Are the Champions” by Queen began playing as soon as the judge announced they’d reached a score of 600. She said everyone was shouting and embracing, and admitted she was getting emotional just remembering the moment.
Dodging technicalities to secure the record
Achieving this huge stunt wasn’t simple. Guinness World Records has very specific rules about what qualifies as an official costume for record-breaking purposes, according to CBC.
Attendees weren’t allowed to wear dragon costumes or dress up as inanimate objects. To be included in the official count, participants had to completely cover their bodies except for their feet, which led to a lot of people wearing large inflatable dinosaur suits and full-body character costumes.
Even dogs from around town got in on the fun, dressed in little dinosaur costumes! However, Guinness didn’t include them in the official dinosaur count. Judges guided all the approved dinosaurs into a designated area and used drones to take photos and videos of the large group from above.
After seeing a similar attempt fall through in the town of Drumheller because of minor rule issues, the university meticulously planned their own record attempt. Their successful execution resulted in a certificate being displayed on campus and a confirmed listing in the next Guinness World Records book.
