As a huge fan of crime dramas, I honestly think Ozark is Netflix’s best. It’s a four-season show that still hasn’t been topped, and that’s saying something! Netflix has released so many original shows since the 2010s – it’s hard to keep track of them all, and they just keep adding more in every kind of genre you can imagine.

Netflix is known for having a huge library of content, though the quality isn’t always consistent. However, they’ve created some truly excellent original series, and one of their early hits, the four-season crime drama Ozark, remains one of the best in the genre.

Jason Bateman delivers what many consider his finest performance as Marty Byrde, a financial advisor who washes money for a dangerous Mexican cartel. To expand his operations and take advantage of the area’s thriving tourism, Marty uproots his family and moves them to the Ozark Mountains in Missouri.

He quickly finds himself caught between FBI agents, surprisingly dangerous local criminals, and a thriving drug scene that could challenge Mexican cartels. Many consider it one of the best shows in the last decade, and it’s definitely Netflix’s strongest crime drama offering.

Ozark’s Sense Of Place Sets It Apart From Other Crime Dramas

Ozark is a gripping and carefully constructed show with a consistently dark and unsettling mood. The series starts with Marty facing a desperate crisis, and that intense feeling never really fades. It’s also brilliantly acted, with standout performances from Laura Linney, Esai Morales, Lisa Emery, and a young Julia Garner.

What makes Ozark stand out, like other excellent crime dramas, is its strong sense of location – a feeling of place that’s hard to find elsewhere. Breaking Bad achieved this with the vast, monotonous deserts of New Mexico, which reflected Walter White’s growing dissatisfaction and emptiness.

The first season of True Detective took us to the Louisiana swamps, a forgotten landscape left to decay in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Similarly, Ozark transports viewers to the remote rivers and lakes of Missouri, a setting rarely depicted on TV.

The Ozark Mountains blend rugged natural beauty with a strong, sometimes ruthless, entrepreneurial spirit. It’s a place where making a profit and keeping customers happy are top priorities, creating a unique setting for a character like Marty, who’s comfortable navigating both traditional business and the risky world of illegal drugs.

Netflix’s Latest Crime Drama Shows Have Missed The Mark

Despite several attempts, Netflix hasn’t been able to replicate the success of its crime drama Ozark. Shows like Seven Seconds, Queen Sono, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Florida Man, Painkiller, and Griselda have all tried, but none have had the same lasting impact.

Most Netflix originals don’t last long – many fail quickly, and even the successful ones often get cancelled after a couple of seasons. It’s unusual for a show to run for four seasons or more on the platform, which might explain why Netflix hasn’t produced anything that’s quite as popular as Ozark.
