The future of Star Trek is uncertain, making it a great time to explore everything the franchise has to offer. While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have more seasons planned, there aren’t any new Trek shows being made right now. With both of these shows expected to conclude in the next few years, fans of science fiction are likely to miss having new Trek content.
If you’re a fan of Star Trek looking for something new, consider the Stargate franchise. It offers a wealth of content, including films, TV shows, and more. It all started with the 1994 film Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. Then, in 1997, Stargate SG-1 debuted, becoming one of the most enduring science fiction series ever made.
Star Trek Fans Should Check Out Stargate SG-1 and Its Spin-offs
Over ten seasons, the team in Stargate SG-1 journeyed through an ancient alien portal called a Stargate, visiting different planets and learning about alien civilizations. The show continues the story from the 1994 movie, building a detailed and imaginative world inspired by myths and legends from around the world.
SG-1 is packed with exciting science fiction and thoughtful observations about society, often feeling similar to Star Trek. You really grow to care about the characters, who feel like a close-knit family, and the show tackles meaningful themes. It starts with mostly self-contained episodes, much like the early seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but later seasons develop longer, connected storylines.
While some actors have joined and left over the years, the show has consistently been excellent throughout its impressive ten seasons. When it was at its peak, SG-1 delivered stories that were just as compelling as the best episodes of Star Trek. However, Stargate distinguishes itself from Star Trek with its modern and believable setting.
Though both shows feature compelling characters that keep audiences engaged, Star Trek envisions a hopeful future created by Gene Roddenberry, while Stargate is set in the present day. Stargate feels more grounded, focusing on military teams and navigating complicated modern political situations, making it different from the more idealistic Star Trek.
Similar to Star Trek, Stargate has expanded into many movies and spin-off series, providing a wealth of entertainment. Stargate: Atlantis draws inspiration from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, sending teams to explore a different galaxy. And like Star Trek: Enterprise, Stargate: Universe uses a continuing storyline, following a team’s uncertain adventure on an old spaceship.
A New Stargate Series May Be Coming Soon
Amazon Prime Video approved a new series late last year, though details about the story are still scarce. Martin Gero, known for his work as an executive producer on Stargate: Atlantis, will be the writer and showrunner. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The upcoming Stargate series will pay tribute to the original shows and movies, and also aim to attract a new generation of fans. In an interview on November 19, 2025, Martin Gero discussed this latest installment in the Stargate franchise.
The new Stargate series will feature many familiar faces from previous shows, but it won’t be a reboot. According to Gero, it’s a completely new story within the Stargate universe, designed to attract new fans and serve as a great starting point for anyone unfamiliar with the franchise. The series will also benefit from updated visual effects.
The Stargate franchise, starting with the original movie and continuing through all its spin-offs, is just as worthy of praise as Star Trek or Star Wars. Stargate SG-1 especially appeals to a wide audience, from dedicated sci-fi enthusiasts to those who are new to the genre.
