A well-known actor from the DC Universe (DCU) has suggested he won’t be returning for future projects. He played a character who appeared in several DC films and the Peacemaker series, and it seems his time with the franchise is over. His comments about this have been widely discussed online.
Why Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag won’t return after Peacemaker Season 2
Joel Kinnaman has confirmed he won’t be returning as Rick Flag Jr. in the DC Universe. He stated in an interview with Screen Rant that Season 2 of Peacemaker was his last appearance as the character, putting an end to speculation about his future role.
Joel Kinnaman first played Rick Flag in Suicide Squad and continued the role in The Suicide Squad, where the character’s storyline concluded. However, even after Rick Flag Jr. seemingly died in The Suicide Squad, he reappeared in Peacemaker through flashback scenes. Kinnaman jokingly referred to this version of the character as an ‘alternate universe, mealy-mouthed Rick,’ a nickname he and director James Gunn used.
Looking back on his time with the series, Kinnaman acknowledged he wasn’t always professional during the making of the 2016 film, describing a chaotic atmosphere where the cast was constantly partying. He contrasted this with the 2021 installment, praising James Gunn’s direction for creating a much more focused and disciplined, and therefore professional, work environment.
Since it doesn’t seem likely he’ll reprise the role, Kinnaman has focused on new projects. He’s currently working on the film Icefall and the TV series Imperfect Women and an adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole.
