Steve Irwin’s son surprises Charli D’Amelio by naming a kangaroo after her

Robert Irwin honored Dancing with the Stars champion Charli D’Amelio by naming a kangaroo at his family’s zoo after her, following her visit.

Following in his father Steve Irwin’s footsteps, Robert Irwin is now the main public face of the Australia Zoo, continuing his father’s work as a conservationist and wildlife advocate.

In addition to teaching people about wildlife, Robert competed on and won Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars in 2025, partnering with Witney Carson.

In early April 2026, the Australia Zoo welcomed Charli D’Amelio, the winner of the 2022 season of Dancing with the Stars. She received the show’s top prize, the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.

Charli shared a TikTok video of her zoo visit, featuring a conversation with Irwin. While he was showing her the kangaroos, he gave her a really special recognition.

“It’s absolutely right that we name a kangaroo after you,” Irwin said with a smile. “It would be a great honor – we could call him Little Charli! What do you think of that?”

With a look of disbelief, Charli said, “This is amazing! Thank you,” while gently hand-feeding one of the animals.

The TikTok creator visited the Australia Zoo and had an amazing experience, getting to hold a koala, pet kangaroos, and see a rhinoceros from very close range.

“Thank you for the best day!” Charli captioned her video.

Robert responded to a comment, saying, “Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to visit and say hello to Charli the kangaroo whenever you like!”

Robert isn’t the first in his family to win Dancing with the Stars. His older sister, Bindi, won Season 21 in 2015 with her partner, professional dancer Derek Hough.

Robert Irwin recently went viral again, following widespread praise last year for saving a python that was trapped inside a vending machine.
