State of Decay 3 boss admits game was just a “Word document” following zombie deer removal

State of Decay 3 was first revealed in 2020, and developers promised a lot of great features for fans, even though at that point the game mostly existed as a planning document.

The trailer for State of Decay 3 was released a while ago and generated a lot of excitement. It showed off zombie animals, the familiar open-world gameplay the series is known for, and plenty of weapons to fight off the undead.

The trailer featured a rather unsettling zombie deer, which generated a lot of attention. However, the developers have confirmed that this creature won’t actually appear in the final game. They explained that the trailer was released very early in development, before the game was fully fleshed out.

Undead Labs head reveals no zombie animals

In an interview with Sunny Games, Undead Labs’ lead, Philip Holt, explained that the 2020 trailer was shown before development on the game had actually begun.

Holt explained that when they started working on the trailer for State of Decay 3, the game was in its very early stages. There wasn’t even a fully developed game or team yet – just around four or five people, and the game’s concept was initially outlined in a Word document with only the beginnings of functional software.

Blur Studio created the trailer, and it was entirely pre-rendered. According to Holt, it showed the team’s initial ideas for State of Decay 3. However, he also mentioned that not everything in the trailer will make it into the final game – for example, they’ve decided against including zombie animals.

Although the trailer heavily featured a unique ‘zombie deer,’ the new game will actually feature traditional human zombies. Instead of focusing on that unusual enemy, the developers are planning to release an Alpha version so players can experience the gameplay and see the final features.
