Wrapping up a five-year journey, Dune: Part Three will conclude director Denis Villeneuve’s stunning space opera. The film, starring Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya (this is the second of three films this year featuring Pattinson and Zendaya!), adapts the second book in Frank Herbert’s Dune series, Dune Messiah. Though the movie will take some liberties with the original story, it promises to further expand the world of Arrakis and deliver even more intense drama.
As a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, I really appreciated how he didn’t rush things – the long runtimes of the first two movies let him fully bring Frank Herbert’s world to life. We all expected the next movie to be just as epic, maybe even longer! But I just read a report saying that might not be true, and honestly, I’m a little surprised. It seems like they’re aiming for something a bit different this time around.
An IMAX listing revealed the expected runtime for Dune: Part Three will be 2 hours and 20 minutes. This makes it significantly shorter than the previous films in the series. The original Dune (2021) lasted 2 hours and 35 minutes, and Dune: Part Two (2024) ran for 2 hours and 46 minutes.
Although Dune 3 is the shortest film in the trilogy, it still provides ample time for Villeneuve to complete his ambitious story. The recently released trailer demonstrates that the movie will deliver plenty of exciting action and compelling drama over its 140-minute runtime, particularly following the impactful ending of the previous installment.
The new movie picks up nearly twenty years after the first one, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides grappling with the consequences of starting a large-scale war and his place in history. Robert Pattinson will play the film’s antagonist, Scytale, a dangerous shapeshifter determined to overthrow Paul. The story will also explore the challenges Paul and Zendaya’s Chani face as new parents, adding another layer of complexity as Paul navigates his growing power and leadership.
Dune: Part Three will debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
