A popular actress from the HBO show Game of Thrones recently shared information about a scene she filmed for Thor: Love and Thunder that ultimately didn’t make it into the movie.
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones, the actress appeared in several other projects, including The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Masters of the Universe, and White House Plumbers. She also had a part in the 2022 Thor movie, but the director, Taika Waititi, ultimately cut her scenes from the final version.
More information about the cut scenes has come to light. Lena Headey, in an interview with Liam Crowley of ScreenRant for Ballistic, explained that her character was part of a group of witches alongside Angus Sampson and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. She described the trio as “very, very funny and a little crazy.”
Taika Waititi designed the group of witches in Thor: Love & Thunder to help Thor travel to the afterlife.
Headey clarified that the story wasn’t about characters being fired, but more about questioning their purpose. She believes the real goal was to establish a place where they could embark on their own journeys.
I didn’t appear on screen, but I worked behind the scenes on that project. There were three of us playing a group of witches. It was Taika’s idea, and we were meant to guide Thor through the underworld, but we ended up being really funny and a little bit crazy. The story was initially presented as us being fired, but really, the question was just ‘What are these characters even doing here?’ The goal, though, was to establish a place where they could have their own stories. The three of us – myself, Angus Sampson, and Da’Vine Joy – made for a wonderfully chaotic team.
Headey described her co-star Randolph as wonderful and a pleasure to work with, but expressed disappointment that their scenes were ultimately cut from the final version of the movie.
We were witches, and honestly, she’s wonderful – a real joy, even. It’s a shame we weren’t selected, though.
As a huge MCU fan, I’ve always loved spotting the surprise appearances! Over the years, Marvel’s included some fun cameos – everything from Elon Musk and Matt Damon popping up, to voices like Trevor Noah and Ken Jeong. Nathan Fillion, Joan Rivers, Olivia Munn, Justin Theroux, Yvette Nicole Brown, and even the late, great Garry Shandling all made appearances too. But of course, no discussion of MCU cameos is complete without Stan Lee – he showed up in over 20 films, which is just incredible!
Released in June 2022, Thor: Love and Thunder brought Taika Waititi back to direct another Thor movie after the success of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The film made $760 million worldwide. Critics gave it a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it at 76%.
Although Lena Headey filmed a scene for Thor: Love and Thunder, it didn’t make the final cut of the movie. However, her acting career continued steadily after Game of Thrones ended.
Lena Headey, known for her roles in shows like Game of Thrones, recently saw her Western series The Abandons canceled on Netflix. However, she’s quickly moving on to a new thriller called Ballistic, where she plays a mother who uncovers a disturbing truth about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death in action.
Since Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel Studios has released eight movies as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Deadpool & Wolverine, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Coming up in 2026 are Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st and Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th, which will be released alongside Dune: Part Three.
Ballistic will be released in theaters on Friday, April 17, 2026.
