Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord season 1. The latest Star Wars show, Maul – Shadow Lord, revisits a well-known character while also introducing a lot of new faces to the Star Wars universe. The first two episodes, now streaming on Disney+, have begun to introduce these new characters, particularly those inhabiting Janix, the newest planet in the franchise. While Maul is the central figure, Shadow Lord is building out a supporting cast to populate this new world.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about how ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ is shaping up! It’s not just a lightsaber duel fest; it’s become a really complex crime thriller with a fantastic cast. The story sees Maul taking on the criminal organizations he feels have done him wrong, and he ends up on the wrong side of the law on Janix. Plus, we’re introduced to two brand new Jedi characters, and honestly, every single character – both new and familiar from Star Wars – feels worth investing in.

Maul
Voiced By: Sam Witwer
Darth Maul, the central character in Maul – Shadow Lord, is a well-known figure in the Star Wars universe. He first appeared as Darth Sidious’s apprentice in The Phantom Menace, but was seemingly killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi after murdering Qui-Gon Jinn. However, Maul survived and was rebuilt with robotic legs in The Clone Wars. Driven by a thirst for revenge against the Jedi, particularly Kenobi, he went on to lead the Shadow Collective, a powerful alliance of criminal organizations.
In Maul – Shadow Lord, Maul’s criminal organization, the Shadow Collective, has fallen apart. After Maul was captured by Ahsoka Tano during the Siege of Mandalore in The Clone Wars, some of his allies within the Collective, including Looti Vario and Nico Deemis, turned against him. Now, Maul is working to rebuild his empire and get revenge on those former partners, whom he believes have benefitted from his suffering.
By the time I started following Maul’s story in Maul – Shadow Lord, he’d left the Sith, but he was still deeply connected to the dark side. That’s why he became so fixated on Devon Izara, a Jedi padawan who somehow survived Order 66. He seemed to think he could turn her to the dark side and train her as his apprentice. I got the impression he believed together, they’d be powerful enough to take down the Empire and finally get revenge on Palpatine, the man who’d betrayed him.
Devon Izara
Voiced By: Gideon Adlon
Darth Maul is fixated on a Jedi apprentice named Devon Izara. Devon, a young Twi’lek, was one of the few to survive the devastating Order 66, along with her master, Eeko-Dio Daki. They went into hiding on the planet Janix, living in poverty as beggars. However, Devon grew restless with their situation and tried to steal food from a local merchant. This led to her arrest and brought her to the attention of Darth Maul.
Maul brought Devon back to his secret base and attempted to convince her to join him. He argued that the Jedi had misled her and that, since they were both fighting the Empire, they should work together. Devon largely ignored his arguments, but she did manage to use the Force to escape her cage. However, she’s still in danger while trapped in Maul’s hideout.
Rook Kast
Voiced By: Vanessa Marshall
Fans of Star Wars will recognize Rook Kast, a loyal follower of Darth Maul. This Mandalorian warrior first appeared in season 7 of The Clone Wars during the battle for Mandalore, and it seems she survived the conflict. She continued to serve Maul, clearly believing in his goal to rule Mandalore, addressing him respectfully as “My Lord.”
Kast is second-in-command to Maul, managing his mercenary group and handling day-to-day operations. She’s brought in several Mandalorian mercenaries to fight with them. Beyond her leadership, Kast is a skilled fighter with strong tactical thinking, and she’s a loyal supporter of Maul’s quest for power, offering him valuable advice.
Captain Brander Lawson
Voiced By: Wagner Moura
Detective Brander Lawson of the Janix police is a stark contrast to Maul. While seemingly dedicated to his job, Lawson isn’t afraid to cut corners to get results. He relies on a criminal informant named Rheena-Sul, with whom he shares a complicated past. Brander is a father to his son, Rylee, and is separated from Rylee’s mother, though Rylee lives with him on Janix.
Lawson doesn’t trust the Empire either. He told Two-Boots that asking for their help to catch Maul would likely harm Janix. He also recognized Maul’s lightsaber, calling it a “laser sword” and noting he hadn’t seen one like it since the Clone Wars. This suggests Lawson may have a negative past experience with the Empire and could even be sympathetic to the Jedi.
Two-Boots
Voiced By: Richard Ayoade
Two-Boots is a police droid who works with the Janix police and is friends with Brander Lawson. He’s somewhat unusual for a droid in that he wears boots – which is how he likely got his name! Two-Boots is very strict about following the rules, even urging Lawson to contact the Empire when a suspicious image appeared. He also has a dry sense of humor and enjoys playfully teasing his friend Lawson.
Icarus & Scorn
Voice By: Steve Blum
Darth Maul leads a small band of mercenaries, and two of his followers are Zabraks named Icarus and Scorn. Currently, little is known about them except that they are brothers completely devoted to Maul. Icarus fights with a special type of blaster called a rotary blaster. Because of their shared species, Icarus and Scorn might have a connection to Maul’s past with the Nightsisters of Dathomir, or perhaps to his brother, Savage Opress.
Spybot
Voiced By: David W. Collins
Spybot is a small but vital member of Maul’s criminal team. This new droid looks like an Imperial probe droid and handles most of the crew’s hacking and surveillance. He’s also known for his funny, self-directed chatter, providing some comedic relief.
Looti Vario
Voiced By: Chris Diamantopoulos
I remember when Looti Vario first showed up – he was originally someone Darth Maul wanted to punish. But things changed fast, and Maul ended up using him instead. Vario was an Aleena, and he basically ran a whole smuggling operation on the planet Janix. He was a major rival to Nico Deemis, and while they were enemies fighting for control of Janix’s criminal world, they actually had a weird respect for each other. Eventually, Vario managed to kill Deemis, but that’s when Maul’s forces captured him.
Currently held by Maul, Vario is acting as his link to the Pyke Syndicate. Having previously smuggled spice for them, Vario was forced by Maul to disclose the details of their next shipment. Despite being used as a source of information, Vario is essentially a prisoner, much like Devon Izara. Even under pressure from Maul and Kast, he still manages to crack jokes and offer sarcastic remarks.
Master Eeko-Dio Daki
Voiced By: Dennis Haysbert
After the release of Maul – Shadow Lord, little is known about Devon Izara’s mentor, Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki. While Daki appears to be a knowledgeable and experienced Jedi, he seems somewhat unaware of the dangers lurking in the galaxy’s criminal world. He thought he and Devon could get by relying on the goodwill of others, and he advised his apprentice to stay hidden from the Empire by avoiding attention.
Following Devon’s arrest, Daki advised her to trust the legal process to resolve the situation. However, when Maul captured her, Daki tried to rescue his student. He briefly halted Maul’s transport with the Force, but after Maul destroyed a bridge, Daki was compelled to use his powers to keep it from completely collapsing and save people. Daki also managed to avoid speaking with the police, but he actively sought out Brander Lawson at the conclusion of the second episode.
Rylee Lawson
Voiced By: Charlie Bushnell
Rylee Lawson, the son of Brander Lawson, made a quick appearance in episode 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord. He’s a teenager who enjoys a sport similar to lacrosse. Rylee revealed that his parents are separated and he’d like to reconnect with his mother, wherever she may be. It also seems like Brander’s demanding job as a detective is causing some tension in their relationship.
Chief Klyce
Voiced By: Keiko Agena
Brander Lawson’s boss is Chief Klyce, a human woman who, despite appearing briefly in episode 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord, quickly made a strong impression. We learned she was working to reassure the governor of Janix and that she shares Lawson’s dislike of Imperial interference. It’s clear Klyce is a supportive boss who shields her team from political issues within law enforcement.
Rheena-Sul
Voiced By: Pamela Adlon
Rheena-Sul is a puzzling character introduced in the first two episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord. When Brander Lawson needed details about Maul and the Shadow Collective, he went to her office. This suggests she works as an information dealer within Janix’s criminal network. She clearly has connections, as she knew about both Looti Vario and Nico Deemis, further supporting this idea.

Rheena-Sul and Brander Lawson clearly have a past together. During their talk, she referenced Catalor, a planet Lawson revealed he was previously betrayed on. Sul also invited Lawson to dinner, hinting at a possible romantic interest. The series, Maul – Shadow Lord, will likely explore the details of their shared history in upcoming episodes.
Nico Deemis
Voiced By: John Carroll Lynch
Nico Deemis was one of the first criminals to cross paths with Darth Maul. Deemis, a Gran, ran a criminal organization that rivaled Looti Vario’s. In the beginning of the Maul – Shadow Lord story, Maul and his team robbed Deemis’s vault and used one of his droids to make it look like Vario was responsible. Deemis then tried to attack Vario, but Vario won the fight, and Deemis was killed for double-crossing Maul.
