The historical drama Black Sails is leaving Netflix soon, as the service updates its selection of shows and movies.
The TV show Black Sails, which originally aired on Starz from 2014 to 2017, tells the story leading up to the events in Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, Treasure Island. It became available on Netflix two years ago, but will soon be leaving the platform.
Netflix has revealed a list of titles being taken off its service in April. Viewers will have until April 16th to watch shows like Black Sails and the 2023 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which are both being removed on April 17th.
Several titles will be removed from Netflix in the next few weeks, including Cast Away on April 7th, Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Kubo and the Two Strings on April 8th, seasons 4 & 5 of The Fairly OddParents on April 15th, Last Christmas and all five seasons of Van Helsing on April 16th, the entire James Bond movie series on April 21st, and Harold and the Purple Crayon on April 30th.
Several films, including Best in Show, Cheaper by the Dozen, Despicable Me, District 9, Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, Free Solo, Ford v Ferrari, Man on Fire, Misery, Pitch Perfect, Rio, The American President, Zero Dark Thirty, and Waiting for Guffman, were taken off Netflix in early April.
The series Black Sails follows Captain Flint, played by Toby Stephens, and his crew’s thrilling quest for the legendary Urca de Lima treasure in the 1700s. Captain Flint is a reimagining of the famous character from Treasure Island.
The show features a talented cast including Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker, Tom Hopper, Zach McGowan, Toby Schmitz, Clara Paget, Mark Ryan, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Sean Cameron Michael, Louise Barnes, Rupert Penry-Jones, Luke Roberts, Ray Stevenson, David Wilmot, and Harriet Walter, alongside Stephens.
Jonathan E. Steinberg created the series alongside Robert Levine, and all three were executive producers. They were joined by executive producers Michael Bay, who also directed the Transformers films, as well as Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Chris Symes, Michael Chernuchin, Dan Shotz, and Brad Caleb Kane.
The first season of Black Sails earned a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but critics loved the second season, giving it a perfect 100% score. Overall, the show has an average Rotten Tomatoes rating of 81%.
Critics loved Black Sails, and the show also received several award nominations. It won a Creative Arts Emmy for both Outstanding Sound Editing and Outstanding Special Visual Effects, and it earned two wins at the Visual Effects Society Awards.
Many history buffs consider Black Sails to be a top-notch show, and it recently gained even more fans after being available on Netflix. Though it’s leaving Netflix, you can still watch it on Starz.
