The hit action thriller is now a streaming sensation! It quickly climbed the charts after becoming one of the most-watched original films on the platform – previously known as the record holder until K-Pop Demon Hunters took the title. Viewership is still incredibly high as fans eagerly anticipate both a sequel and several spin-off shows.
The action film Extraction burst onto Netflix in 2020, starring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a fearless mercenary with nothing left to lose. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the movie quickly became popular and follows Hemsworth’s character as he’s hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian drug lord. However, the mission quickly becomes incredibly dangerous as he navigates a treacherous world of weapons and drugs.
A third Extraction movie is being made, and interest is clearly high! The first film has recently become very popular on Netflix, with many viewers revisiting its incredible 12-minute, single-take action scene. It’s currently trending alongside other recent additions like War Machine, starring Alan Ritchson from Reacher, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Anaconda, and the top-ranked action thriller Humint.
Several ‘Extraction’ Spin-Offs Are Now in the Works Alongside a Sequel
After the success of Extraction 2 in 2023 (scoring 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 67% for the first film), a third Extraction movie is planned. Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave are both returning for the action-packed sequel, with filming now expected to begin in June 2026. While the story hasn’t been revealed yet, it will likely feature Tyler Rake undertaking another dangerous mission, with scenes planned for India, Thailand, Prague, and Australia, where Hemsworth is from.
In addition to Extraction 3, two new projects are being developed. One of these is Mercenary, starring Omar Sy from Lupin. It takes place in the same universe as Extraction and follows the story of a mercenary as he attempts a dangerous hostage rescue in Libya.
I’m really excited about another spin-off coming from the Extraction universe! This one’s going to star Ma Dong-seok – Don Lee, you probably know him – and he’s seriously one of the most underrated action stars out there. It’s called Tygo, and from what Netflix says, he’ll be playing a former child soldier who becomes a mercenary. Apparently, a mission goes south, and he decides to take revenge on the Korean underworld. Sounds awesome!
