Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Trailer Was Perfect – Except For One Thing

The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was a hit, but one element has worried fans. After its release worldwide, the trailer quickly became the most-viewed trailer in 24 hours, with Sony and Marvel celebrating its success. Despite the positive reaction, a significant concern emerged among viewers.

On March 18th, Sony Pictures unveiled the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The trailer ended with three images that were a nod to classic Spider-Man comic book covers, referencing over 60 years of the character’s history. One of these shots showed Peter Parker swinging through New York City, with a criminal dangling beneath his arm.

This scene closely mirrors the cover of Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15, which came out in June 1962. That cover marked Spider-Man’s debut, introducing the character in his first story created by the legendary Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Following that, Holland’s character faces off against a villain called Tarantula, whose background remains a mystery in the film. The comic book version of Tarantula is a revolutionary from a made-up South American country who favors violent action over political solutions, and later gains superpowers after arriving in the US.

A famous showdown between Spider-Man and Tarantula appeared on the cover of Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man #135, published in May 1974. The story also prominently featured the Punisher, a character who will be played by Jon Bernthal in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Brand New Day.

Spider-Man swings upward on a web, positioning himself above Boomerang, another of the film’s villains. Boomerang throws two boomerangs at Spider-Man as they both soar through the air over the city.

This scene of Spider-Man battling Boomerang is directly inspired by the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man comic book #345, originally published in March 1991. That issue also includes appearances by popular characters like Silver Sable, Hammer Industries, and Venom.

Recreating comic book covers in the movie is a great idea, but the film’s colors appear a bit muted compared to the vibrant look of the original comics. While fans often critique the color grading in Marvel movies, the visuals in the Brand New Day trailer might be the only thing preventing it from being considered perfect by many.

Tom Holland returns as Spider-Man in Brand New Day, a new Marvel movie coming to theaters on July 31, 2026. This film, the first of two MCU releases planned for that year and part of Phase 6, picks up a few years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
