The 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge improvement over the 1993 live-action version in every way, boasting better actors and much higher production values. Fans had been hoping for a movie like this for years, and it delivered! The film was also full of fun references and appearances by characters from other Nintendo games. The sequel continues this tradition of cameos, but one popular Nintendo character hasn’t made an appearance yet.
Charlie Day, who starred in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, believes his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star, Danny DeVito, would be ideal to play Wario if the character were ever featured in a film. In an interview with ScreenRant, Day called DeVito his “dream casting pick” for the role, saying he thinks DeVito would be a perfect fit for the Mario universe and would make a great Wario.
Day voices Luigi in both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He’s also a star and co-creator of the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where DeVito joined the cast in its second season in 2006 and has been a regular ever since. DeVito is a well-known actor with memorable roles in films like Batman Returns, Twins, and The War of the Roses. He’s also collaborated with Illumination, the studio behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, voicing the lead character in The Lorax and appearing in their 2023 film, Migration.

I first encountered Wario back in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins when it came out in 1992, and he instantly grabbed my attention as this wonderfully wacky villain! He was clearly designed to be the opposite of Mario, and honestly, that’s a big part of why I loved him so much. It’s been amazing to see him become so popular, even getting his own series of games where he’s more of a mischievous antihero. And of course, he’s always a blast to play as in those Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl games. It’s just perfect that he even has his own sidekick – Waluigi, who’s tall, lanky, and a cool purple color!
Kaley Day isn’t the only star hoping Danny DeVito will voice Wario. Jack Black, who voiced Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, also publicly supported DeVito for the role back in 2023. With a cast already featuring big names like Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Brie Larson as Rosalina, DeVito would be a perfect addition to the Super Mario universe.
If Danny DeVito were to voice Wario, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s been considered for a major Nintendo role. When the Pokémon: Detective Pikachu movie was announced, fans heavily campaigned for DeVito to voice Pikachu, and test footage with his voice was even created. Ultimately, the part went to Ryan Reynolds, known for his role in Deadpool.
I’m already excited about the possibility of a third Mario movie! It feels almost certain after how well The Super Mario Bros. Movie did – it made $59 million in the US and $122 million worldwide in just its first two days, even with the critics being a bit harsh. I’m really hoping they introduce characters like Wario in a sequel. It would be great to see them mix things up from the first two films, and maybe even launch a whole new series of Nintendo-based movies!
