Who’s That Diva at the End of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is packed with characters Nintendo fans will recognize, including Yoshi, Rosalina, and even Fox McCloud from Star Fox. However, it surprisingly leaves out what many consider the best character in the Mario universe—at least until the very end. The final moments of the movie, shown after the credits, are actually more thrilling than anything else that happens throughout the entire film.

What happens in Mario’s post-credits scene?

Ukiki, a mischievous monkey who previously stole from Toad, makes a comeback to swipe from someone else. However, Princess Daisy quickly intervenes with a punch to the face, then smiles and winks as the scene closes. Ukiki originally appeared in the 1995 game Super Mario 2: Yoshi’s World.

Daisy? Who is that diva?

Princess Peach rules the Mushroom Kingdom, which is the setting for most Mario games, but Princess Daisy comes from Sarasaland, the world featured in Super Mario Land. Interestingly, that 1989 Game Boy title is the only Mario game where Daisy needs rescuing instead of Peach—a twist fans really enjoyed, making it one of the best-selling Game Boy games of all time. Since then, Daisy has become a popular character, appearing in over 50 games, including recent titles like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Tennis, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and various Mario Party and Kart games.

Daisy’s quick cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is noteworthy. She’s the only important character from the Mario games who hadn’t yet appeared in a film. Even Rosalina, a more recent addition to the franchise and featured in fewer games, has a prominent role—which felt like an oversight for many fans of Daisy. Her brief appearance at the end hints that she’ll finally have a bigger part to play in future Mario movies.

Why is Daisy important?

Daisy is, and always has been, the moment.

Daisy and Peach look very similar – Daisy has brown hair and a yellow dress, while Peach has blonde hair and a pink dress. Like Luigi, Daisy often feels like a secondary character compared to her friend. However, their personalities are quite different. Peach is known for being gentle and kind, while Daisy is energetic, loves sports, and is more of a tomboy. Despite not being featured as often in games, Daisy makes a strong impression – her signature line is a loud, enthusiastic “Hi, I’m Daisy!” and she generally sounds happiest when she’s shouting.

The Mario games don’t focus much on storylines, which gives fans freedom to interpret characters as they wish. Attempts to pair Daisy with Luigi haven’t resonated with players, but she’s unexpectedly become a beloved figure within the LGBTQ+ community. A quick search online reveals a wealth of fan art depicting a romantic relationship between Daisy and Peach. Her connection to flowers in several games is also seen as a nod to gay culture. However, beyond her confident and energetic personality, a major reason for Daisy’s popularity is that she’s often overlooked. While LGBTQ+ fans appreciate a strong, flamboyant personality, they especially connect with those who are undervalued and unseen.

Who should voice Daisy?

Daisy doesn’t have any lines in the movie, so we’ve been thinking about who could voice her. The most logical choices would be Deanna Mustard, who voiced the character for almost 20 years, or Giselle Fernandez, who currently voices her. However, the Mario movies haven’t shown much appreciation for voice actors in the past, so talented performers like Tara Strong or Grey DeLisle probably wouldn’t be considered, even though they’d be great.

Since a big-name actress is likely going to voice the character of Daisy, it would be ideal to cast a queer woman in the role. Kate McKinnon would be a fantastic choice, and Sarah Paulson or Jodie Foster would also be incredible – the budget clearly allows for top talent. We’re also excited by the possibility of Reneé Rapp taking on the part.

Honestly, it’ll probably be a huge star like Scarlett Johansson or Margot Robbie. We’d also love to see Kirsten Dunst get the role – she’s incredibly talented and doesn’t get enough credit, just like the character Daisy.
