Netflix is developing a limited series based on Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed novel, The Corrections, first published in 2001. The book, which helped launch Franzen’s career, is known for its witty, realistic portrayal of family life and its insightful social observations. The story centers on a Midwestern family who come together for Christmas at the urging of their mother, Enid, who wants one last holiday with the family before her husband, Alfred, becomes too ill. Their three grown children – Gary, Chip, and Denise – each grapple with their own personal struggles.
Meryl Streep, known for her work with Netflix on films like Don’t Look Up and her Emmy-winning performances in limited series such as HBO’s Angels in America and NBC’s Holocaust, will star as Enid. This role is reminiscent of her portrayal of Violet Weston in the 2013 film August: Osage County, where she played the head of another troubled family in the Midwest. Streep will also be an executive producer, working alongside the book’s author, Franzen, who is adapting the story for the screen. All episodes will be directed by Cord Jefferson, the Oscar-winning director of American Fiction.
It’s still unclear who will star in or when the new Netflix series based on The Corrections will be released. The story of adapting this book has been quite a journey! Years ago, HBO planned a series and even filmed a pilot with a fantastic cast – Dianne Wiest, Chris Cooper, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, and Greta Gerwig – but the project didn’t move forward. Before that, director Robert Zemeckis considered making a movie. Now, after a long development process, it seems The Corrections is finally becoming a reality with this new show ordered directly to series by Netflix.

Netflix has acquired the rights to adapt The Corrections after winning a bidding war against its competitor, Paramount+. HBO, which previously attempted to turn the book into a series without success, didn’t participate in the bidding. This is a shift from a recent situation where Paramount beat Netflix in a deal to buy a studio. Interestingly, Paramount TV Studios actually creates several shows for Netflix, including Emily in Paris, XO Kitty, and a new version of Little House on the Prairie. Despite the “Paramount” name, the studio frequently collaborates with other companies.
Netflix is rapidly expanding its collection of high-quality TV shows. Upcoming projects include Rabbit, Rabbit with Adam Driver, Enigma Variations starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Weather Girl featuring Julia McDermott, Next Door with Tessa Thompson, Trigger Point starring Joel Edgerton, and Black Hole, adapted from the graphic novels by Charles Burns. It’s clear Netflix is focused on delivering compelling and dramatic content.
Fans of Meryl Streep have a lot to look forward to! She’s starting a busy period with the release of The Corrections, and will quickly follow it up by returning as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2. She’s also been cast to play Joni Mitchell in a new biopic.
