Jack Black and his fellow cast members from The Super Mario Bros. Movie recently shared a song that didn’t make it into the film. While on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Black, dressed as Bowser, played guitar and sang “The Ballad of Mario,” with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Brie Larson, Charlie Day, Glen Powell, and Donald Glover joining in on vocals.

The new Mario movie, released on April 1st, is proving popular with viewers even though critics haven’t been impressed. When a new song from the movie was released, IGN used the opportunity to criticize the film, implying the song might have improved it.
Despite everything, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is exceeding box office expectations and breaking records. This recent promotional push from Jack Black and the team probably won’t slow down its success—and might even boost it, particularly as more people hear positive things about the film.
A Missed Opportunity
Jack Black’s song “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie was very popular. The emotional ballad, sung by his character Bowser, was Black’s first time appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist. In 2023, it went Platinum, meaning over a million copies were sold in the United States, and it was nominated for many awards.

Considering how well “Peaches” did, it’s a little unexpected that a similar song wasn’t included. Although The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has several montage sequences, it doesn’t feature any complete songs. However, adding Black’s latest ballad likely would have made the film’s already short 98-minute length even longer.
Many listeners feel the song would have been perfect during the end credits, and its exclusion is disappointing.
A Simple Song
Jack Black’s new song for the Mario movie isn’t particularly memorable when it comes to the lyrics. The first verse goes like this: “There once was a man named Mario, you know who I’m talking about. He had a brother Luigi, who always wore green. Then there was Princess Peach, who I really liked. But they beat me with the help of a small mushroom person named Toad.”

The song, much like the movie it’s from, is straightforward but enjoyable. The video created for The Tonight Show seems to show the entire cast having fun with it, fully embracing the playful spirit.
Doing Its Job
Although Nintendo hasn’t officially announced a third Super Mario movie, the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie makes it seem very likely. If Jack Black’s new song becomes as popular as “Peaches” was, we might see Bowser performing another musical number in the next film.

How people feel about a new movie can be just as important as the movie itself. The Mario movies are already popular, but things like the cast appearing on The Tonight Show keep the excitement going. Even if a particular song wasn’t included in the final film, it’s still working – it’s keeping people interested and focused on what makes the movie enjoyable and something they’ll want to see again.
