Dave Filoni has made his first significant decision since becoming head of Lucasfilm. Following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure after more than ten years, Filoni was appointed President and Chief Creative Officer, alongside co-President Lynwen Brennan. While there haven’t been many Star Wars announcements since the change in leadership, Filoni is already working to ensure the continuation of one of his series.
Dave Filoni, now President at Lucasfilm, has renewed Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord for a second season, as confirmed by StarWars.com. This is happening before Season 1 even premieres on April 6th, making it the first Star Wars series to get a renewal before its initial season is released.
The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, expands the Star Wars universe by filling in the gaps between The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Star Wars Rebels. It focuses on Darth Maul, exploring his efforts to build a power base on Janix after surviving numerous assassination attempts and distancing himself from his master, Darth Sidious.

Dave Filoni created and produced this series, building on his extensive history with Lucasfilm Animation. Before working on live-action Star Wars shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, Filoni was a key creative force behind animated series such as Star Wars Rebels and The Bad Batch.
With Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy now leading Star Wars, the first new projects – Maul – Shadow Lord and The Mandalorian & Grogu – are crucial. How audiences respond to these releases could significantly shape the future of the Star Wars universe. Specifically, The Mandalorian & Grogu is testing the waters for turning a successful TV series into a movie, and its performance will likely decide if this approach is used again.
Maul – Shadow Lord is the newest animated series from Lucasfilm, and it’s been officially renewed for future seasons. While it’s unusual to renew a show before its first season even airs, it makes sense considering Dave Filoni’s strong commitment to the project. This renewal could also hint at the direction Star Wars is heading under Filoni’s leadership.
What Other Moves Will Dave Filoni Make as Lucasfilm President?

It’s extremely rare for a Star Wars show to get renewed for another season before the current one airs, especially since Disney bought the franchise. Recent shows like The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte faced long periods of uncertainty, ultimately being canceled or put on hold. Even for upcoming series like Ahsoka, it’s not yet certain if they’ll get additional seasons beyond what’s already been planned.
The early renewal of Maul – Shadow Lord could suggest Lucasfilm is becoming more confident under Dave Filoni, and is now prepared to commit to projects for multiple years. This would likely encourage fans to become invested in these stories right from the beginning.
Dave Filoni recently renewed a show he’s heavily involved with creatively, which is a good sign for his other projects like The Mandalorian & Grogu and Ahsoka. While the future of these Star Wars shows depends on how well they perform, Filoni’s new leadership role might give them more room to continue even if they don’t immediately succeed.
DC Studios is following a pattern similar to what happened with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s arrival. Since taking charge, Gunn has consistently supported projects he’s also directly involved in creatively. For example, he quickly approved a second season of Creature Commandos – a show he created and writes – and is writing and directing a new Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow.
With Filoni now in an executive role at Lucasfilm, there are benefits. Because he’s so deeply involved in the creative process of these projects, he offers insights that go beyond just the business side of things.
The revival of Star Wars: Rebels character Maul in Solo: A Star Wars Story suggests Lucasfilm will keep supporting its animated shows for years to come, and might also fund other projects led by Dave Filoni.
