A Japanese police station has brought back its adorable Shiba Inu officer, and he’s officially on the job with a new rank and set of responsibilities.
Okay, so this is pretty cool! The Yokkaichi Minami Police Station just announced my favorite good boy, Mamesuke – a five-year-old Shiba Inu – is officially back on duty for another year! He’s basically a safety ambassador for the town, and I love seeing him helping out. Glad to hear he’s sticking around!
Mamesuke started his work in 2023, helping with school route safety and appearing in campaigns to promote traffic and fraud awareness. He’s even an honorary Police Inspector, meaning he’s much more than just a friendly face!
On April 3rd, the station chief presented a certificate officially recognizing the individual’s ongoing position.
Japan’s police “inspector” dog is back on duty
Yokkaichi Minami Police Station recently appointed Mamesuke as their Public Relations Dog. The station describes Mamesuke as a friendly and approachable officer who will help raise awareness about preventing fraud and promoting traffic safety.
On the morning of April 9th, we’ll be helping students get to school safely by providing guidance along the route. We, along with Mamesuke, are working to ensure the community feels safe and secure.

Mamesuke will be back on duty very soon, participating in a street safety event at a school crossing in Yokkaichi. He’ll be helping to promote safety during the morning commute.
The popularity of the Shiba Inu is part of a larger trend in Japan where towns and regions often use unique mascots to attract visitors and boost local tourism.
Earlier this year, a cat named Yontama became an official stationmaster. In a similar move, police have partnered with a well-known VTuber to teach young people about new traffic laws.
