Taylor Sheridan Changes Yellowstone History by Rewriting Colby’s Death

As a big fan of Yellowstone, I’m really intrigued by what Taylor Sheridan is doing with Marshals. It looks like he’s revisiting a core conflict from the original show, but this time aiming for a more hopeful outcome. In the fifth episode, “Lost Girls,” Kayce and Tate unexpectedly stumble upon a human trafficking operation. Meanwhile, Dutton Jr. has a chance encounter with an old friend while stopping at a truck stop in Wyoming. It’s a compelling twist on familiar themes!

Just before a road trip to Wyoming, Tate almost experiences a life-threatening situation that would have deeply affected his father, Kayce. Kayce reminds Tate that he’s all he has left, highlighting how close Tate came to tragedy, especially considering Kayce recently lost his wife, Monica, to cancer in the Yellowstone prequel series.

Tate Dutton Almost Dies In Marshals Episode 5

Wow, Episode 5 of Marshals was intense! I was seriously on the edge of my seat when Tate almost got trampled by that wild mustang! It turns out Kayce has been holding onto that horse for a really sweet reason – he originally wanted to break it in for Monica to ride, before they knew about her health. It’s just heartbreaking to think about, and makes that scene even more powerful.

Kayce and his old friend Pete “Cal” Calvin, who was his team leader in the Navy SEALs, come across a wild stallion. They discover the horse has escaped its enclosure and go to find it. Once they locate the mustang, Kayce describes it as unpredictable and dangerous, while Calvin likens it to pure, unrestrained fury.

As a longtime fan, I’ve always found the horse in Marshals fascinating. Even though Kayce manages to catch it in Episode 2, it’s clear right away this animal is unpredictable and could be dangerous. He lets it run free on the ranch for a while, but everything changes in Episode 5 when his son almost gets hurt. That’s when Kayce realizes he needs to find a safer place for it, so he takes the horse to Wyoming, hoping to find a good new home – a place where it can truly belong, considering its connection to Monica.

Kayce and Tate continue their search for a buyer, but a discovery involving Monica’s horse leads them to a much more serious issue: the kidnapping and trafficking of Hayley Charlo, a friend of Beth Dutton. Luckily, Kayce and Cal’s team of marshals begin investigating, subtly referencing a past event.

Marshals Reimagines Colby’s Yellowstone Fate

Tate’s recent accident echoes a tragic event from Season 5 of Yellowstone that deeply affected fans. Like Colby Mayfield, a popular ranch hand, Tate faced a life-threatening situation. Colby was killed when he was trampled by a horse while trying to rescue Carter.

In the fifth episode of Marshals, the show offers a more hopeful take on Colby’s fate, with Tate escaping a wild mustang unharmed. Similar to Carter, Tate was interacting with a difficult horse despite its erratic behavior. Fortunately, Kayce intervened to help Dutton Jr., and his father’s fast response prevented a repeat of a past tragedy.

The scene where Kayce steps in is particularly stressful for Tate, and viewers of the original series might recall the death of Colby. Many felt Colby’s unexpected death near the end of Yellowstone was pointless, as he was a well-developed character and it happened so late in the show’s run.

Each death in the show Marshals adds layers to the story, giving longtime viewers a richer experience. However, Tate’s near-death experience actually leads to a hopeful resolution, which opens the door for the spinoff to explore how loss impacts other towns in Montana. Because Tate survives, the focus shifts away from the Dutton family’s tragedies, making the overall story even more powerful.
