Season 2 of Apple TV+’s Your Friends & Neighbors feels as superficial as its characters and the world it portrays – it’s all style and no substance. Like other Apple TV+ shows that blend comedy and drama, such as Ted Lasso and Shrinking, it often stretches scenes out too long and has characters making confusing choices. The show also depends too much on Jon Hamm to carry it through its weaker moments.
As one character put it in season 2 of Your Friends & Neighbors, the show just doesn’t have a clear purpose. With a large cast of characters who are mostly self-absorbed, overly concerned with sex, and think too highly of themselves, it’s still hard to tell after two seasons whether the show is making fun of the rich or simply is a shallow, dramatic series. Regardless, it doesn’t really work, it’s easily forgotten, and frustratingly, it’s somewhat enjoyable—even though a third season is already planned.
It’s A Challenge To Invest In A Show With Such Unlikable Characters
After enduring the surprisingly Emmy-nominated opening theme – which many viewers skip – you’re dropped into the wealthy suburban world of Westmont Village, inspired by Westchester County, New York. There, you’ll encounter a large number of unremarkable, middle-aged couples acting out, drinking excessively, having affairs, and generally embodying every stereotype of a midlife crisis among the rich.
The biggest letdown of this show is that it started strong, hinting at a modern take on American Beauty in its first season, but then lost its way. It awkwardly attempts to connect with viewers on an emotional level while simultaneously missing the mark on cultural sensitivity. If the characters are supposed to be exaggerated representations of wealth and consumerism, it’s unclear why they’re given such typical, feel-good sitcom plots designed to earn our sympathy. Aside from Jon Hamm’s character, it’s hard to know if we’re even supposed to root for most of them.
The characters in Your Friends & Neighbors aren’t necessarily unpleasant because they’re rich or showy, but rather because they blow small issues out of proportion, turning them into big, dramatic problems that don’t really matter. While some viewers who enjoy over-the-top drama might be okay with this, others may find that many scenes feel like drawn-out, pointless conversations. Simply put, the second season of Your Friends & Neighbors, with its ten lengthy episodes, doesn’t offer enough satisfying content to make it worth watching or to evoke a strong emotional connection from the audience.
Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Is An Unfocused Mix Of Loose Satire & Bougie Soap Opera
While shows like HBO’s Succession consistently delivered a sharp, focused satire over its four seasons, Your Friends & Neighbors feels inconsistent. It wavers between offering genuine criticism and simply showing off, resulting in a confusing experience. The show throws a lavish party, but instead of feeling impressed, you’re left feeling irritated by the excessive display. Despite a lot of effort to appear real, very little feels authentic. This mirrors Apple’s position as a massive tech company – worth over $3.7 trillion – trying to establish itself in high-end television by releasing another polished, expensive series starring Jon Hamm.
It’s unfair to say Jon Hamm is too talented for this show, but sometimes his performance makes you remember his iconic roles in series like Mad Men and Fargo, and it feels like he’s not fully challenged here. He’s definitely not phoning it in – in fact, he’s a major reason to keep watching. It just seems like he’s mostly playing a version of Don Draper who’s a little more progressive and aware. If you’re a fan of Hamm’s work, from Baby Driver to his commercials, he’s all the reason you need to give this show a try.
I was so excited to see James Marsden join the cast of Your Friends & Neighbors for season 2! He and Jon Hamm have amazing chemistry – every scene they’re in together is just electric. And Olivia Munn is fantastic this season, honestly one of her best performances yet. We get to see the whole Cooper family again too, which is… something. Honestly, though, it’s kind of funny – the show started as a crime series, but the mystery feels totally forgotten. Calling this a true crime drama? Yeah, Walter White would not be happy.
Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Is Watchable, But It’s A Step Back For The Franchise
Look, Your Friends & Neighbors isn’t bad, exactly, but it’s frustrating because you can see the potential it squanders. Honestly, it just needed a more compelling, crime-focused storyline and fewer episodes dedicated to stuff that didn’t really matter. A lot of it feels like it’s just…there, padding out the runtime. As the second season unfolded, it felt like the initial idea behind the show got lost. If it weren’t for Jon Hamm’s performance, I honestly don’t think this series would have much of a future. He’s really carrying the whole thing.
By the end of the second season, the show reaches a passable conclusion, but it doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of its original concept. While the show is known for its twists and turns, even the biggest moments feel hurried and disconnected. This leaves viewers with a disappointing feeling, similar to regretting a purchase. It’s not surprisingly unpredictable; instead, the show often feels aimless, relies too much on dialogue, and lacks the tension or compelling characters needed to keep you invested week after week.
I was really hoping to enjoy this series, especially because I love Mad Men and Jon Hamm. Unfortunately, after a decent start, the second season became consistently frustrating and ultimately disappointing. It wasn’t a terrible show, but it tried to do too many things at once – crime drama, social commentary, workplace issues, family dynamics, and romance – and didn’t fully commit to any of them. A Jon Hamm crime series should focus on being just that, not a little bit of everything else.
The new season of Your Friends & Neighbors starts Friday, April 3, 2026, on Apple TV. Each Friday, a new episode will be available through June 5.
