Elder Scrolls Online Is the Latest MMORPG To Lean Into Single-Player, And I’m Here For It

MMOs remain very popular, with games like World of Warcraft still having large and loyal communities, and new ones appearing frequently. However, not everyone enjoys playing with lots of other people online. While it’s fun to play with friends or meet new people in games, many players – including me – actually prefer playing alone. Game developers seem to be recognizing this, and we’re starting to see more games that offer a similar experience to MMOs, but are designed for solo players.

Many online multiplayer games are now emphasizing features for players who prefer to play alone, offering ways to enjoy the game without needing to commit to a group or deal with the complexities of guilds. Some new games, like Don’t Lose Aggro, are even designed to feel like a multiplayer game but can be played entirely by yourself. Soon, the popular Elder Scrolls Online will also cater to solo players. With the release of Season 1 later this year, ESO will finally include dungeons that can be completed without a team, and that’s fantastic news!

Who Are These Other People in My Elder Scrolls Game?

I struggle with social anxiety, so playing online multiplayer games can be difficult. I do enjoy them, though, because I love exploring interesting game worlds and stories. I usually keep my microphone off and avoid chatting with other players. That’s why it took me a while to try The Elder Scrolls Online, even though I’ve been a fan of the Elder Scrolls series for years. I wasn’t sure an online version would be as good as the single-player games like Skyrim and Oblivion, which I think are fantastic examples of what makes RPGs great.

Playing ESO felt exactly as I expected – like returning to the beloved world of Elder Scrolls, but with a lot of new faces. It was strange at first seeing other players running around in a place that felt so familiar; those usernames appearing felt like little surprises. I’m sure many strong communities have developed within ESO over time, and those connections are what make MMORPGs thrive. However, if you’re used to the single-player Elder Scrolls games, it takes some getting used to seeing other people sharing the world with you.

Putting my initial nervousness aside, I really grew to love The Elder Scrolls Online. The game is great for solo players like me, offering lots of quests and stories to enjoy without needing to join a guild. Like most online role-playing games, it used to require playing with others for certain challenges and rewards. But that’s changing with the launch of Season 1, which will make more content accessible to solo players.

ESO‘s New Solo Dungeons Will Offer Balanced Play for Single-Players

Similar to other online role-playing games, Elder Scrolls Online is adding more things for players to enjoy on their own. Don’t worry, though – large group events and the classic dungeons players already love aren’t going anywhere. The game is moving towards seasonal content, and that includes brand new Solo Dungeons, which I’m really excited about!

Today, Elder Scrolls Online is beginning Season 0, which is a trial run for how new content will be added to the game. In 2026, Season 1 will officially launch, bringing with it exciting new features like naval combat and Solo Dungeons. These dungeons will be updated versions of existing ESO dungeons, specifically designed and balanced for a single player experience.

I’m so excited for Season 1! They’re bringing back Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices as single-player experiences, which is awesome. Plus, there will be cool new cosmetic rewards to earn. The best part? You can choose how hard you want the challenge to be – stick with the regular difficulty or really push yourself. I, for one, can’t wait to dive into these dungeons solo when the update releases!

These changes should open up MMORPGs to more players. Existing multiplayer experiences that dedicated fans enjoy aren’t being removed. However, players who don’t have much time for coordinated events or who prefer solo play will have more opportunities to participate, too. Whether or not this works well will depend on how ZeniMax executes it, and we’ll have to see how it turns out, but I’m optimistic.
