Dungeons & Dragons has recently been experimenting with a lot of new character options, called subclasses. The latest versions are now available for playtesting. As part of the ongoing updates to the game (often called 5.5e), these new subclasses are moving beyond traditional fantasy themes, with earlier versions exploring genres like horror and post-apocalyptic settings.
D&D Beyond’s latest Unearthed Arcana introduces four new character options: the Pestilence Domain cleric, Circle of the Titan druid, Hell Knight fighter, and Demonic Sorcery sorcerer. You can find details on these subclasses, plus two new villainous paths, in the free ‘Villainous Options’ PDF available on the website.
D&D’s Four New Subclasses Are Villainous
As expected, the latest Unearthed Arcana playtest continues to move away from traditional heroic fantasy themes, and the new character subclasses reflect this shift. For instance, Pestilence Domain clerics focus on weakening and draining enemies, a departure from the usual idea of divine healers. And Circle of the Titan druids go even further, gaining the power to completely engulf their foes.
Hell Knights are fearsome warriors who coat their weapons and armor in hellfire, causing grievous wounds. Even more terrifying are Demonic Sorcerers, who can warp reality and draw upon the dark power of the Abyss.
Unearthed Arcana Could Foretell D&D’s Future
As a D&D fan, I always get excited about Unearthed Arcana! They’re basically early drafts of new character options, and Wizards of the Coast doesn’t promise they’ll ever officially publish them in a full book. But the cool thing is, they make the playtest PDFs available for free, so you can try them out in your games right away without spending any money. They might not be perfectly balanced, but if your Dungeon Master is up for it, they can add a really unique and fun twist to a campaign!
Playtesting new Dungeons & Dragons content often sparks discussion about where the game is headed, and the recent news about Ravenloft confirms what many players suspected: we’re likely to see more horror-themed character options. These villainous choices might hint at a darker direction for the game, but it’s unlikely Wizards of the Coast will create something as extreme as the controversial 2002 book, The Book of Vile Darkness.
These ideas could add some interesting twists to any Dungeons & Dragons campaign, particularly for characters grappling with difficult choices between good and evil. Plus, it’s always welcome to have fresh content for D&D, and it’s even better when it’s free!
