Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow: Hawkgirl Actress Isabela Merced Shares New Video Ahead of Filming

Isabela Merced is getting ready to reprise her role as Hawkgirl! She recently shared a workout video as she prepares for her return in Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow. The sequel, directed again by James Gunn, is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. It will star David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with Lars Eidinger playing Brainiac. This will be Merced’s third time appearing in the DC Universe, after her first role in Superman and a part in Season 2 of Peacemaker.

Merced shared a video on Instagram showing off her fit back, writing “I love my trainer.” It seems her trainer was the one filming.

I was so impressed with the Hawkgirl actress in Man of Tomorrow! She really looked the part – strong and capable, with her athletic gear, short hair, and those weightlifting gloves. She definitely seemed ready to take on anything!

Fans have been anticipating this for a while! Merced first hinted she’d be in the sequel back in September 2025 when she responded to James Gunn’s original announcement on Instagram with a short but meaningful message: “See you there.”

Now that her return is official, it seems she’s been preparing to deliver on the excitement surrounding it.

Filming for Man of Tomorrow is expected to begin around April 17th in Atlanta, Georgia. Actor David Corenswet, along with other returning cast members, seems to be preparing to reprise their superhero roles, almost two years after they initially started filming Superman.

Merced isn’t the only character returning for Man of Tomorrow. Aaron Pierre will also be back as John Stewart/Green Lantern, having previously played the role in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns. This will be Pierre’s second appearance in the DC Universe, and suggests Lanterns will show how his character develops before he’s fully established in the Superman sequel.

Fans of Hawkgirl are especially excited about this news. Actress Xochitl Merced has previously expressed her interest in recreating the popular romance between Hawkgirl and John Stewart from the Justice League animated series, stating she “loved the idea” in July 2025. She sees similarities between their relationship – an alien falling for a human – and the well-known love story of Lois Lane and Superman.

As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited! With these two characters officially cast in Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn seems to have everything he needs to bring one of DC’s greatest love stories to life on the big screen. I can’t wait to see how it unfolds!

Hawkgirl’s Expanded Role in Man of Tomorrow

Since many of Hawkgirl’s Justice League teammates haven’t been confirmed for the next movie, it seems actress Aldis Hodge’s Kendra Saunders will have a more significant part in Man of Tomorrow.

I’m really hoping we’ll see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho in the 2027 movie, but their roles haven’t been officially confirmed yet. James Gunn has said the next film will be more of a team-up, with less emphasis on Superman, and honestly, that makes me think Hawkgirl could really become a central character – which I’d love to see!

A lot of the conflict surrounding her character likely comes from her pivotal moment in the first film – executing President Ghurkos. Her statement, “I’m not Superman,” before killing the dictator established her as a fighter who doesn’t follow the same rules as Clark Kent, and this difference in their approaches will probably create friction between them in Man of Tomorrow.

Brainiac’s arrival could have consequences beyond just politics, potentially revealing a hidden part of Kendra’s past. It might awaken forgotten memories of her alien origins on Thanagar and past lives, suggesting she’s a collector of worlds herself.

Now that John Stewart has joined the team, Hawkgirl could be the link between the Justice Gang from the first movie and the bigger Justice League that Superman is putting together.
