Hilarious Baby Steps theory suggests it’s actually a secret Uncharted sequel

Discovering the background story of the game Baby Steps has led to a funny idea: it could actually be a real Uncharted sequel! The main character, who’s clumsy and wears a baby suit, might be Nathan Drake’s son.

Baby Steps challenged Bennett Foddy, the creator of Getting Over It, by applying his notoriously difficult game design to a three-dimensional environment. The game requires precise control of every step while climbing a mountain, and any fall results in significant setbacks.

At first glance, the game seems like a simple test of patience, similar to other games by its creator. However, a closer look suggests a hidden story that might tie into a major PlayStation game series.

In the game Baby Steps, players control a character named Nate. Interestingly, fans who’ve studied the game’s story and data suggest he might actually be the son of Nathan Drake, the famous adventurer from the Uncharted series.

Is Baby Steps a secret Uncharted game?

In Uncharted 4, we find out Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher have a daughter named Cassie. The game doesn’t mention them having any sons.

The Baby Steps Discord channel dedicated to lore has been very active lately, ever since IGN reported on some new discoveries.

During a dream, Nate is directly called “Nate D.” He’s also known as Nathan Bake at one point in the sequence.

We later learn he has a sister named Cassie and a father named Nathan. The credits also reveal his mother’s name is Elena – a connection that isn’t accidental.

Data miners exploring the game’s files discovered that Nathan Drake’s character model is actually labeled “Nathan Drake.” They also found subtle hints, such as an achievement image for “World’s Best Dad” that strongly resembles an older version of Nathan Drake.

This happened several months after players discovered a secret that triggered a hidden, half-hour-long cutscene. In that extended scene, the game developers discuss their work, and one of them expressed a desire to revisit the Uncharted series.

In the game Baby Steps, if you try to avoid watching the story scenes, the game surprisingly rewards you with a hidden 30-minute scene where the actors seem to forget they’re in a game. This is a playful nod to the desire for more games like Uncharted, with someone in the scene expressing that very wish.

Honestly, the developers aren’t saying much more, which is understandable. And Sony hasn’t given this the thumbs-up, so it’s all unofficial. As a long-time fan, I was really surprised to hear anything about Nathan Drake even having a son, and the idea that he’s a bit of a coward is… well, it’s a lot to take in! Naughty Dog has never hinted at any of this, so it’s definitely unexpected.

Since the last Uncharted game, Lost Legacy, came out in 2017, this new project, Baby Steps, could be the first fresh Uncharted story we’ve seen in almost ten years.
