James Gunn’s DC Universe is starting to plan its first standalone Batman movie, though it’s still in the very early stages. Fans are excited to learn who will play Batman and when the movie will hit theaters. As development at DC Studios progresses, a key question remains: when can audiences expect to see it?
One of the heads of DC Studios recently shared a potential release timeframe for *The Brave and the Bold*, which will be the first solo Batman movie since 2012’s *The Dark Knight Rises* and 2022’s *The Batman*. James Gunn is currently starting work on the film, which was initially announced as part of his first set of planned projects, but a firm release date hadn’t been decided yet.
During an interview on the *Happy, Sad, Confused* podcast with Josh Horowitz, James Gunn addressed the possibility of releasing two Batman films in the same year. With *The Batman – Part II* currently set for October 2027, Horowitz questioned if Gunn would also release *The Brave and the Bold* that year. Gunn responded, “Probably not, probably not the same calendar year, no,” suggesting *The Brave and the Bold* might come out at a different time.
Recently, someone on Threads (@oliverdragt) asked James Gunn about a rumor claiming the movie wouldn’t be released until 2030 or 2031. Gunn immediately responded, denying the rumor was true.
Although DC Studios hasn’t announced a firm release date for *The Brave and the Bold*, it was the third movie revealed as part of James Gunn’s initial slate of projects, following *Superman* and *Supergirl*. Based on recent comments from Gunn, the film is currently expected to arrive in theaters around 2028 or 2029, with 2029 being the more probable timeframe. Releasing two Batman movies so close together – one in October 2027 and another in 2028 – would likely be too soon.
The first solo Batman movie in the new DC Universe will be called *The Brave and the Bold*, and it will be directed by Andy Muschietti, who also directed *The Flash*. The film will introduce the Bat Family, particularly focusing on the dynamic between Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian, in a story never before seen on the big screen.
When To Expect More News on the DCU’s First Batman Movie
Even though *The Brave and the Bold* is further along in development than many other DC Studios projects, there’s still a lot of work left to do before it’s ready for fans to see. Currently, Andy Muschietti is the only confirmed creator involved, and there are rumors that a writer is working on the script.
Rumors suggest James Gunn is about to choose Brandon Sklenar to play Batman in his upcoming film, and a few clues seem to support that idea. If true, Gunn will then need to find an actor to play a young Robin, and assemble the large cast that’s typical for a Batman movie.
As a huge DC fan, I’m hearing that with films like *Supergirl* and *Clayface* already slated for release before *The Brave and the Bold*, James Gunn has a good amount of breathing room to really craft his vision of Gotham City. It’s exciting to think he can build this world properly before Bruce Wayne and the whole Bat Family swing into action!
Despite the production challenges facing *The Batman – Part II*, excitement remains strong for both that film and James Gunn’s upcoming Batman movie. Fans have been waiting a long time for a new take on the Caped Crusader on the big screen.
