Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 10, Episode 6 of Scrubs, titled “My VIP.” While John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox hasn’t been seen on screen since the revival’s first episode, a quick line in the latest installment is arguably the funniest moment of the new season. It’s easy to overlook in the show’s fast-paced style, but it’s hilarious because of what it implies about what Dr. Cox has been doing since leaving Sacred Heart Hospital. The line creates a really funny picture in your mind of his current life.
Dr. Cox was a major draw for fans when Scrubs returned, having been a character throughout all nine seasons of the original show—even the episodes from Med School. So, it was unexpected and a little disappointing when he quickly chose JD (Zach Braff) as his replacement and then the character of McGinley disappeared. The new cast members have done a good job keeping audiences focused on the present, though, until Dr. Cox received a hilarious mention in Episode 6, “My VIP.”
“My VIP” Reveals at Least Some of What Dr. Cox Has Been up to Since Leaving Sacred Heart

I really enjoyed seeing JD and Dr. Park forced to work together a lot in “My VIP.” It’s the first time they’ve really leaned into that dynamic, and it pays off – their bickering is instantly hilarious. There’s this one moment where Dr. Park starts to really lay into JD, but Braff’s character just cuts him off, saying, “Dr. Cox forwards me your insulting emails.” It was such a clever line! And honestly, it’s the only time we’ve heard anything about Dr. Cox since he left the show, which made it even better. What a perfect little update!
According to JD, Dr. Park isn’t simply telling JD he dislikes him; he’s also been writing it all down and sending emails to their old boss, seemingly just to get it off his chest. It’s amusing how unclear the purpose of this is. And then there’s Dr. Cox, who doesn’t just read these emails – he forwards them to JD. It seems he does it purely for his own entertainment, which is exactly what you’d expect from Dr. Cox.
When Is Dr. Cox Coming Back to the ‘Scrubs’ Revival?

As we’ve discussed, Scrubs has handled Dr. Cox’s limited availability for the revival surprisingly well. John McGinley is juggling filming Scrubs with his new role on HBO’s Rooster. It would have been disappointing if Dr. Cox only appeared in a single episode, but thankfully, that won’t be the case. McGinley has confirmed when fans can expect to see his character return.
In an interview with Deadline, the actor revealed that Dr. Cox will return in Episode 8, airing on ABC on April 8th. He’ll be back in a “significantly changed role,” potentially as a patient at Sacred Heart. It’s currently unknown if he’ll also appear in the final episode of this revival, Episode 9. While nothing is confirmed, if Scrubs gets another season, the writers might give Dr. Cox a bigger part, but this is just a possibility right now.
