Paapa Essiedu, who plays Professor Snape, shared that he actually fell off his broom during filming of a big Quidditch scene for HBO’s Harry Potter series.
I just saw the first trailer for the new Harry Potter series and I’m already so excited! It gave us a peek at Harry – played by Dominic McLaughlin – heading to Hogwarts with Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton). It looks amazing!
The video shows a snowy Quidditch match, featuring Harry in his Gryffindor uniform walking onto the field. Although no one is flying, it appears to be footage from one of Harry’s early games.
He wasn’t the only actor new to the sport, though! Paapa Essiedu revealed he actually fell off his broom while filming the Quidditch scenes for HBO’s Harry Potter series.
Paapa Essiedu said it was “humiliating” to fall off his broom filming Harry Potter’s Quidditch episode

Paapa Essiedu, who will play Professor Severus Snape in the new HBO Harry Potter series, described the production design for the Quidditch episode as “completely insane.” He told Esquire that the episode utilizes a mix of practical effects, like animatronics, and visual effects created with green screens.
He described an episode featuring a lot of Quidditch, where his character needed to fly on a broom. A whole stadium was built for the scenes, and he remembered seeing wires used during Harry’s flying scenes. When it was his turn, his broom was held up by a large mechanical arm.
Essiedu explained that he fell from the broom while it was three meters in the air.

The actor remembered a time when they were performing a difficult stunt and fell off their broom, leaving them dangling. What was most embarrassing, they said, wasn’t the fall itself, but the fact that no one reacted with laughter. Instead, everyone just stared in silence, which created a really awkward and uncomfortable atmosphere.
This amusing detail highlights the show’s commitment to staying true to the original books. In the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Snape actually officiated a Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, a scene that was left out of the 2001 film. The movie only showed Harry’s first game against Slytherin, famous for him accidentally swallowing the Golden Snitch.
