Netflix has featured many impressive casts over the years, but the crime thriller Narcos truly shines when it comes to perfect casting. The show, which ran for three seasons and was based on real events, was so well-cast that it helped launch the careers of several actors.
The series follows the story of Pablo Escobar and his drug cartel in Colombia, detailing their rise to power and eventual downfall, alongside the attempts by U.S. law enforcement to capture both Escobar and his competitor, Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela. While Narcos takes some liberties with the true events, it remains compelling thanks to the believable performances of its actors.
The show boasts an exceptionally talented cast, rivaling some of the greatest in television history, and it still feels remarkably strong eleven years after first appearing on Netflix. The three main actors have become major stars in the entertainment industry.
Narcos Has One Of The Best Casts In Netflix History
Because Narcos is based on real events, accurate casting was crucial. The role of Pablo Escobar carried the most weight, as many Netflix viewers already had a strong image of the infamous drug lord based on his widely known appearance.
The role went to Wagner Moura, a 38-year-old Brazilian actor who wasn’t well-known internationally at the time. Series director José Padilha suggested him, and he turned out to be ideal for the part. Moura closely resembled Escobar in appearance and behavior, and he also brought a natural charm to the character.
As a huge fan, I’m completely captivated by Pedro Pascal and Boyd Holbrook’s performances. They play the DEA agents determined to take down Pablo Escobar, and their chemistry is incredible. They both bring such different energies to their roles, which really makes the tension within the team trying to stop Escobar feel so real and gripping. It’s fascinating to watch how they bounce off each other.
Damián Alcázar delivers a compelling performance as drug lord Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela, and supporting actors Joanna Christie and Paulina García add depth and humanity to the story. Importantly, Narcos consistently features Latin-American actors in its ensemble cast, prioritizing authenticity over simply catering to English-speaking viewers.
The actors work wonderfully together, creating a show that is both genuinely honest and thoroughly enjoyable. It feels remarkably realistic compared to most streaming dramas.
The 3 Lead Actors Of Narcos Have All Become Major Hollywood Stars
Given how great their chemistry was on screen, it’s no surprise that the three leads from Narcos have become big stars in Hollywood. Their success in other projects really shows how smart it was to cast them in the Netflix series.
Pedro Pascal had already appeared in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Graceland, and Game of Thrones, but it was his role in Narcos that truly launched his career. He’s now known for popular projects like The Mandalorian, Gladiator II, and The Last of Us.
Boyd Holbrook has quickly become a recognizable face, appearing in major films like Logan and the latest Indiana Jones movie, as well as popular TV series such as The Sandman and Justified: City Primeval. He also received a lot of praise for his performance as Johnny Cash in the film A Complete Unknown. Before his role in Narcos, however, Holbrook wasn’t landing significant parts.
Most importantly, the show introduced Wagner Moura to a worldwide audience. He was already a celebrated actor in Brazil, and this led to leading roles in the series Shining Girls and the film Civil War. Now, he’s finally receiving the awards-season recognition he’s earned.
9 Years After Narcos Ended, Wagner Moura Is Finally Getting The Recognition He Deserves
Wagner Moura has become a highly acclaimed actor over the last ten years, going from his leading role in Narcos to receiving a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination. Following his award-winning performance in The Secret Agent last year, he’s now joining the Star Wars universe with a new character in the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord.
Wagner Moura’s current Hollywood success feels well-deserved, especially considering he first gained fame in Brazil with his 2007 film, Elite Squad. However, his role in Narcos was crucial in opening doors for him and allowing him to become recognized in the American entertainment industry.
