With so many true crime shows and documentaries being made, some people feel the genre has passed its peak. However, Apple TV+’s Black Bird stands out. The show, based on a real-life story, follows Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), a prisoner who is offered a deal by the FBI: if he can get a confession from a fellow inmate, Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), suspected of multiple murders, his own 10-year sentence will be reduced. To do this, Jimmy has to become friends with Larry and try to get him to confess to his crimes while in prison.
If you’re looking for a gripping weekend watch, the six-episode miniseries Black Bird delivers a fictional story rooted in the dark side of human nature. It’s a compelling blend of the suspenseful atmosphere of The Silence of the Lambs and the psychological depth of Mindhunter. While that combination might seem unusual at first, it truly captures the show’s essence. If you enjoyed either of those films, Black Bird – a surprisingly overlooked and haunting series – is definitely worth checking out.
‘Black Bird’s Real-Life Villain Larry Hall Is Just as Terrifying as Hannibal Lecter
Paul Walter Hauser’s performance as Larry Hall is very different from Anthony Hopkins’ iconic Hannibal Lecter. While Larry initially appears quiet, gentle, and even relatable as a prisoner, both characters share a core of hidden brutality. Hannibal’s evil is immediately obvious, but Larry’s is more subtle and gradually revealed. However, Larry’s evil is just as deeply ingrained, making it even more disturbing.
Unlike the fictional Hannibal Lecter, Larry Hall was a real person, similar to the many serial killers featured in the show Mindhunter – including Richard Speck, Charles Manson, Ed Kemper, and Dennis Rader (famously known as “BTK,” which stands for “bind, torture, and kill”). This connection makes his character, and Holt McCallany’s performance as him, particularly disturbing for viewers, creating a unique type of psychological horror.
The Protagonists from ‘Mindhunter,’ ‘The Silence of the Lambs,’ and ‘Black Bird’ Share Eerie Similarities

Apple TV
The way Larry’s true self is revealed to Jimmy and the viewers feels very much like something out of a David Fincher film, particularly reminiscent of the interviewees in Mindhunter—the ones who ultimately get caught because the FBI’s behavioral analysis methods become more sophisticated. Similar to Holden Ford in Mindhunter, Jimmy in Black Bird relies on his own instincts to get Larry to talk. Like Holden, Jimmy operates somewhat impulsively, but this surprisingly creates more suspense than you might expect.
Jimmy, unlike the trained agents in Mindhunter, shares a surprising similarity with Clarice Starling from The Silence of the Lambs. Like Clarice, who begins the film as an FBI trainee thrown into a challenging situation, Jimmy lacks extensive preparation and learns as he goes. Both characters have a kind of hesitant innocence that allows the audience to identify with them. Although both are intelligent – Jimmy relies on quick thinking and street smarts, while Clarice is more academic – neither fully controls the situation when trying to get information from their targets.
