D4 Enterprise is slowly rolling out a new version of the classic game Hydlide for the Nintendo Switch. This version is based on the original 1985 MSX2 release and will be available digitally on Nintendo eShops around the world, including in the US for $6.49.
This MSX2 version of the game was more recent than the earlier versions D4 released for other consoles. The first MSX version, released in 2024, was originally created in March 1985. The PC-8801 version, which came out in 2023, was the very first release of the game, appearing in December 1984.

The story takes place in Fairyland, a magical world completely different from ours. Once, Fairyland was a beautiful, thriving kingdom built around a magnificent royal palace. Inside the palace were three powerful, magical jewels that kept the land peaceful and balanced. In this world, humans and fairies lived together happily.
A cruel man once stole a precious jewel, breaking the complete set and destroying an ancient seal. This act awakened Varalys, a terrifying demon from legend. Varalys used dark magic to scatter the remaining jewels, plunging Fairyland into chaos. Princess Anne was magically split into three fairies and disappeared, while the demon unleashed monsters, filling the land with fear and despair.
When the kingdom fell into hardship, a courageous young man named Jim stepped forward to save it. He took on the responsibility of bringing hope back to his people, embarking on a solitary journey to defeat the monsters and overcome the spreading darkness.
Released in 1985 by T&E SOFT, this is an action role-playing game where you play as Jim, a young hero on a quest to save Fairyland. Your mission is to find the stolen jewels and defeat the evil demon Varalys, bringing peace back to the land.
True to its name as an “Active RPG,” the game focuses on fast-paced action. You’ll switch between attacking and defending, physically running Jim into monsters to fight them.
Defeating enemies earns you experience points, allowing Jim to level up and become stronger. If Jim takes damage (shown by a red health bar), you can simply rest in a safe area to regain your health automatically.
The MSX2 version offers two graphical modes: 64K VRAM (16 colors) and 128K VRAM (256 colors), letting you choose the visual style you prefer.
