Timothée Chalamet went to great lengths to prepare for his role in Marty Supreme, even temporarily affecting his vision. According to Page Six, he used special contact lenses to realistically portray the nearsighted character, Marty Mauser. Optometrist Dr. Mitchell Cassel explained that Chalamet wanted the glasses his character wore to feel authentic, not like a costume. He wanted to truly feel like he needed them, so they designed lenses that would convincingly impair his vision.
Timothée Chalamet intentionally blurred his vision for a role by wearing special contact lenses that made him nearsighted. He then wore glasses to correct the artificial nearsightedness. Director Josh Safdie revealed they used +10 lenses to blur his vision, then -10 prescription lenses in his glasses. This meant that when his glasses came off, he couldn’t see clearly at all. Safdie described the experience as disorienting for Chalamet, who felt like he was “in a fishbowl.” Chalamet was so dedicated to the role that he told the director he’d do anything asked of him. Whether that dedication will translate to success remains to be seen.
