Fans of the ‘Dexter’ revival have been eager to find out how the show will handle the enigmatic New York Ripper character, and the showrunner has now addressed the rumors that Bryan Cranston might play the part.
Throughout the first season of Dexter: New Blood, fans were constantly talking about a mysterious killer called The New York Ripper, and everyone had their own ideas about who it could be. (Warning: spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen the show!)
The murderer remains unseen throughout the story, but it’s revealed they used a long, hooked rod to commit the killings. This unusual weapon is actually part of Leon Prater’s collection.

Even though The Ripper hadn’t killed anyone in years, he was still harassing his past victims with unsettling phone calls. Meanwhile, Detective Claudette Wallace, who first worked on the case, remains deeply fixated on catching him.
In the final episode of the season, after Dexter kills Prater and obtains files about other serial killers, he leaves evidence for the NYPD revealing the New York Ripper’s name as “Don Framt.” It’s currently unknown if this name is real or if the story of the New York Ripper is finished.

Dexter Resurrection showrunner calls New York Ripper a “delicious opportunity”
Throughout the season, viewers developed many different theories about who the Ripper might be, suggesting everyone from the UrCar driver, Blessing, to even Jonah Mitchell, the son of The Trinity Killer.
I’ve been seeing a ton of rumors online that Bryan Cranston, of all people, might play The Ripper in Season 2! It’s super exciting to think about, but honestly, it’s still just speculation – nothing’s been officially announced yet.
With all the speculation swirling around, the show’s creator, Clyde Phillips, has addressed fan theories and whether the character ‘The Ripper’ might appear in a later season.
(segment begins at 1:04:39)
On the Dissecting Dexter Podcast, Phillips suggested the show hadn’t fully explored the Ripper storyline and that the writers intentionally made almost every character a potential suspect.
Yes, I remember that being a popular theory at the time. People suspected all sorts of people – Gigi, Detective Oliva, even Cody, Rita’s stepson, and at one point, even Charlie’s mother, Phillips recalled.
According to Phillips, the producers are very interested in including the Ripper storyline in the next season of the Dexter revival, as it’s considered a compelling and valuable addition.
I’m not claiming anything is definitely correct, but it’s a great chance for us to make the writing feel more authentic and less abstract when we start working on it.
Okay, so I was really excited about that potential *Trinity* prequel series, but it looks like that’s probably not happening now. The showrunner said they’ve basically paused it after *Dexter: Original Sin* got canceled. Apparently, they were planning to introduce a younger James Doakes in that *Dexter* show, which would have tied into *Trinity*, but now that’s off the table. It’s a bummer, honestly!
