The creators of Tilly Norwood, an AI “actor,” have released a song and music video called Take the Lead. The song addresses the strong negative reaction to AI in the entertainment industry and encourages actors to see it as a positive step forward. It directly references the criticism Tilly received after being introduced last year, and aims to position AI as a tool that can help artists, not replace them.
Industry leaders, including SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin, have voiced strong objections to Tilly Norwood, a digitally created performer. Despite this criticism, the studio behind Norwood is now using the AI ‘actor’ to encourage real actors to embrace artificial intelligence. In a promotional song, Norwood sings about the potential of AI, urging actors to lead the way and see AI not as a threat, but as a tool for growth and creative freedom: “Actors, it’s time to take the lead. Create the future, plant the seed. Don’t be left out, don’t fall behind. Build your own, and you’ll be free. We can scale, we can grow. Be the creators we’ve always known. The video Take the Lead begins with a disclaimer: it was created by 18 people—including designers, editors, and an actor—and no animals were harmed during production. The video itself is a fast-paced, surreal montage showing Tilly as a famous celebrity. We see her on talk shows, on billboards, taking pictures with fans, and performing concerts, complete with her own line of dolls that look similar to M3GAN.
