Slay The Spire is famous for its challenging bosses. You’ll face enemies that can deal massive damage with a single attack, and others that try to ruin your strategy by weakening your deck. Overcoming them requires both skill and careful planning.
Like its predecessor, Slay The Spire 2 features challenging final bosses. Many players find these bosses, located at the top of the spire after completing the third act, to be even tougher than those encountered earlier in the game.
Okay, so The Queen is a seriously challenging boss, and she will punish you if your card deck isn’t solid. Let’s break down what makes her so tricky and how I figured out how to beat her.
Encounter Mechanics
When you start the battle with the Queen, you’ll immediately see she’s accompanied by a helper. Normally, the Queen has 400 health points, and her minion has 199, bringing the total health to 599.
In Slay The Spire, minions are destroyed when their creator dies. Because of this, summoning the Queen’s minion is usually not worth it.
Plus, when the smaller enemy is defeated, the main enemy will begin attacking you directly, and hits much harder. Like most fights in Slay the Spire, finishing the battle as quickly as possible is the best strategy.
Don’t worry too much about that one enemy. The Queen has a much bigger problem: she links three of your cards together each time you draw a new hand. While these cards are linked, you can only play one of them each turn. If your deck can’t draw extra cards, this boss can easily end your game.
Defeating the minion won’t remove the effect. This is a lasting negative status on your character.
Boss Strategies
Some decks have a tough time competing against the Queen. Specifically, decks that need to collect several key cards before they can start playing effectively are at a disadvantage. If you happen to draw multiple of those important cards all at once, you won’t be able to use them immediately and will have to wait for your deck to be reshuffled. Usually, by the time that happens, you’ve already fallen too far behind.
Also, as I said before, if your deck doesn’t have enough ways to draw cards, you’ll often end up with useless cards in your hand. Importantly, drawing new cards bypasses the binding rule, because only cards you start your turn with are affected by it.
When facing the Queen, focus on quickly restoring your energy so you can take more turns, and building a consistent way to draw new cards to keep your options open.
Plus, since you only have one health bar to worry about, builds that focus on dealing massive damage in a short time – like Sovereign Blade, Reaper, and Demon Form combined with the Vulnerable status effect – can defeat the Queen very quickly.
Unlike some other bosses, the Queen doesn’t remove negative effects, which means strategies focused on applying damage-over-time effects like Accelerant-Poison and Doom can be very effective. Just be sure to have enough defense in the early turns while you’re setting up your strategy, and you should do well.
