Hero kitten sacrifices itself to save sleeping owner from house fire

An Oregon man says his kitten saved him from a terrible house fire, but sadly, the kitten didn’t make it out alive.

Donald VanWormer was asleep at his home in Tillamook when a fire broke out. He says he was woken up by his 9-week-old kitten, Fred, who was desperately trying to get his attention by scratching and pawing at him as the flames spread.

“I woke up to the kitten scratching and frantically meowing,” VanWormer remembered. The kitten’s distress alerted him to a fire, and when he looked up, he saw the attic was already ablaze.

A man escaped a house fire, crawling to safety as flames spread above him. He received slight burns to his chest and face, but thankfully survived.

Cat dies saving sleeping owner from house fire

VanWormer accidentally picked up the kitten while hurrying to get out, but he dropped it when the ceiling started to fall and everything became smoky and chaotic.

He quickly realized Fred wasn’t with him and hurried back inside, but stumbled and hit his head. Once he regained consciousness, firefighters wouldn’t let him go back in, even though he begged them to help.

After firefighters put out the fire, they discovered Fred’s body right near the doorway, suggesting he almost got out.

The owner believes the cat’s actions gave him just enough time to survive.

VanWormer said he immediately felt a connection with Fred, telling the cat, ‘You’re my lucky charm.’ He’d hoped to have many years with his new pet, but a fire tragically changed everything. Remarkably, VanWormer credits Fred with saving his life.

Firefighters believe the fire started because a dehumidifier got too hot. The fire caused over $1 million in damage to the house, which VanWormer had been working on for years.

He was incredibly thankful that his girlfriend and daughter weren’t home when the fire broke out.

Even though VanWormer is collecting donations to repair his home, he feels the most devastating loss is something money can’t fix.

He explained that while he could repair his house and replace his belongings, nothing could bring Fred back. Fred had sacrificed his life to save him.

I was reading this crazy story the other day about how pets can be heroes, and it reminded me of another one! Apparently, last year a dog in Peru actually saved her family from a dynamite explosion! Can you believe it? The downside is she hurt her voice in the process and can’t bark anymore, which is so sad after being so brave.
