Disney and Pixar are reportedly working on a third Monsters, Inc. movie, according to the Wall Street Journal. The news came to light in a recent profile of Pixar, published by the Journal, as the studio geared up for the release of their new film, Hoppers.
As a movie critic, I have to acknowledge the sheer financial power of this franchise for Disney. The first film, directed by Pete Docter (now a creative leader at Pixar), was a huge hit back in 2001, earning over $528 million worldwide. But the prequel, Monsters University, directed by Dan Scanlon, really blew things up, bringing in a massive $743.5 million globally. That puts the total box office for the entire series well over $1.3 billion – a truly impressive number.
The popularity of Monsters, Inc. led to the Disney+ series Monsters at Work, which continued the story for two seasons and explored more of the monster world. Currently, it’s unknown who will direct a potential Monsters Inc. 3, and details about the plot are being kept secret. We don’t yet know if the new film will continue the original story or go back in time with a prequel. The original movie was based on the idea of monsters powering their world with screams, and the story showed how that system changed.
One of the biggest draws of the Monsters, Inc. films is the original voice cast. John Goodman, who voiced Sulley, and Billy Crystal, who voiced Mike, are so well-known for these roles, but Disney hasn’t yet confirmed if they’ll be in the third movie. Their fantastic comedic timing was key to the success of both the original films and the TV series that followed.
Pixar has more sequels planned beyond the new Monsters movie. Next June, we’ll see Toy Story 5, where Buzz and Woody—now with a little less hair—face off against modern smart tablets. The Incredibles 3 is scheduled for 2028, and Peter Sohn, who directed Elemental, will be directing. Plus, a second Coco movie is anticipated in 2029.
While Pixar is focusing on new, original stories right now, fans will have to be patient for any official news about a third Monsters, Inc. movie.
