Many fans would love to see a sequel to Karl Urban’s film Dredd, even though a previous movie technically exists. Despite not performing well in theaters when it came out in 2012, Dredd is still highly regarded as one of the best comic book adaptations of the 2010s.
The action movie Dredd, starring Karl Urban, follows Judge Dredd and his partner Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) as they become trapped inside a huge tower block run by a dangerous criminal group. While the film received mostly good reviews praising its cast, intense action, and loyalty to the original 2000 AD comics, it didn’t do well at the box office.
Karl Urban’s Dredd Movie Received A Run Of Comic Book Sequels
The movie quickly gained a dedicated fanbase, and people started eagerly requesting a sequel or other films based on the same world. Almost 15 years later, a direct follow-up still hasn’t happened. However, Karl Urban recently gave fans a bit of encouragement, telling The Playlist he would instantly return to play Judge Dredd if given the chance.
People often forget that a sequel actually exists – it was released as a series of comic books. The first one, Dredd: Underbelly, came out from 2000 AD in 2014 and continues the story directly from the original movie.
In the years that followed, 2000 AD continued to expand the world of Judge Dredd with stories like Dust, which took place in the dangerous lands outside Mega-City One, and Uprise. The character Anderson also got her own series, and these comics, along with the others, delved deeper into the rich universe established in the film.
The Dredd Comics Finished In 2018
It’s now been revealed that Alex Garland not only wrote the movie Dredd, but he also secretly directed much of it. He even had ideas for two follow-up films, including one that would have featured the famous Dark Judges – terrifying creatures who believe all life is criminal and deserve to be executed.
Unfortunately, the new Dredd comics weren’t written by Alex Garland, and they don’t quite capture his unique style. While it’s enjoyable to revisit the world of Karl Urban’s Dredd, and the art is really good, these comics aren’t essential for fans of the original movie.
The comic book series that continued after the Dredd movie concluded with the story arc called Final Judgement. This arc features Judge Dredd battling a unique version of the Dark Judges. It’s an enjoyable read and provides a solid ending for the character as portrayed by Urban, giving him a satisfying conclusion.
A Dredd Sequel Will Probably Never Happen
Fans had hoped strong sales of the Dredd movie on DVD and Blu-ray would lead to a sequel, but that didn’t pan out. The release of new Dredd comics briefly gave fans hope again, but unfortunately, a follow-up movie is unlikely at this point.
For years, fans have hoped for a live-action TV show set in Mega-City One with Judge Dredd as a secondary character, but despite being announced in 2017, the project hasn’t progressed. Additionally, a new Judge Dredd movie is in development, and Taika Waititi is currently set to direct.
Because Urban and Waititi collaborated on Thor: Ragnarok, he’s still a possibility for the new movie. However, it seems very unlikely the film will have anything to do with the 2012 Dredd movie.
