DC Studios’ upcoming Clayface movie will be a different kind of superhero film, moving away from typical action-packed blockbusters. As the third movie in the first chapter of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, it will tell the story of actor Matt Hagan and how he tragically becomes the villain Clayface.
I’m really excited about the upcoming Clayface movie! It’s not just that it focuses on one of Batman’s coolest villains, but it’s going to be a genuinely scary and tragic story. Knowing Mike Flanagan – a fantastic horror director – is writing it makes it feel totally different from other DC films. It was originally supposed to come out in September, but now we’re looking at an October 23rd release, and I can’t wait!
Every Unique Element of Clayface That Sets It Apart From Other DC Projects
First Appearance of Clayface in a Live-Action Film

Clayface will appear on the big screen in a live-action movie for the very first time. This is the first time this iconic Batman villain has been featured this way.
This is an important moment for the character because Clayface is a well-known enemy of Batman. Introducing him in a movie will allow a new audience to become familiar with him before he faces off against the DC Universe’s Batman.
Clayface’s appearance in the movie highlights James Gunn’s willingness to take chances and embrace a variety of characters in his new DC Universe, potentially paving the way for more stories focused on the motivations of both heroes and villains.
The DCU’s Gotham City

Although Gotham City appeared in the animated series Creature Commandos, Clayface will be the first time the famous city is featured in a live-action movie within James Gunn’s ambitious DC Universe.
The depiction of Gotham City in the Clayface installment offers a chance to reveal details about Batman and his enemies within the DC Universe. This could hint at how long Batman has been operating and how many villains have already appeared in this new world.
This will also allow fans to clearly see the difference between the Gotham City in the DC Universe (DCU) and the one created by Matt Reeves, definitively separating the two worlds and ending speculation that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be connected to James Gunn’s DCU.
Pure Horror

The upcoming Clayface movie is notable as the first DC film to fully embrace the horror genre with an R-rating. This bold move could help refresh the superhero landscape and combat audience fatigue. While Swamp Thing and Aquaman included some horror aspects, Clayface is taking a much bigger risk by committing entirely to the genre, creating a unique identity for both the film and the DC Universe – distinguishing it from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the previous DC Extended Universe.
In February 2025, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, told CinemaBlend he was very impressed with Mike Flanagan’s script for Clayface, describing it as a “really excellent body horror script.”
Peter and I were discussing the script, and we agreed that if we’d been making movies five years ago, around the time of ‘Belko Experiment,’ a horror script like ‘Clayface’ would have been a dream project. It’s a genuinely well-written body horror story, and the fact that it’s set in the DC Universe is even better.
James Gunn reaffirmed the film’s R rating and described the character Clayface as genuinely frightening, calling him “pure” horror and emphasizing the character’s realistic and psychological depth.
The new ‘Clayface’ movie is genuinely terrifying – it feels incredibly realistic. It’s a deeply psychological and disturbing film, full of body horror and genuinely unsettling imagery. It’s definitely not for younger audiences; it’s an R-rated experience.
The recent Clayface story demonstrates that the DC Universe can successfully venture into genuinely scary horror, even alongside more lighthearted films like the new Superman movie starring David Corenswet. Ultimately, a strong script is the most important thing in the DCU, giving talented directors the freedom to experiment and tell unique stories.
