The popular CBS series Matlock recently returned after a two-month break, but its return coincided with a significant loss. This new version, starring Academy Award winner Kathy Bates, is based on the original show starring Andy Griffith. Bates plays Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a clever and modern take on the classic older-lawyer character, with a unique twist – she’s a woman.
The second season of Matlock begins with Olympia Lawrence and Madeline Matlock trying to repair their relationship after a problem with their plan to bring justice for Madeline’s daughter. Meanwhile, Julian Markston uncovers important information, and Senior wakes up from a coma. This leads to a dramatic episode of Matlock, but something crucial is still missing.
Matlock Season 2 Is Missing A Main Character In Its Midseason Premiere
The latest episode of Matlock got off to a strong start, with Madeline finally sharing her plan with Julian. However, it was the first time in the show’s history that David Del Rio, who plays Billy Martinez, didn’t appear, leaving something missing from the usual dynamic.
Del Rio was already set to not be in Season 2 of Matlock. He was removed from the Paramount lot on October 2nd following accusations of sexual assault made by his co-star, Leah Lewis. This news came out less than two weeks before the season premiered and significantly impacted the show’s direction.
Once the accusations came to light, the show decided to remove Del Rio’s character from the second half of Matlock Season 2 and didn’t plan to find another actor to play Billy Martinez. This means Madeline’s team will be down to just two members starting with Episode 9. On top of that, Sarah’s future on the show is now uncertain because Olympia no longer trusts her, adding to the overall instability.
The departure of a main character from Matlock is definitely changing how things work at Jacobson Moore, as we saw in the first episode after the break. It’s a challenge when you lose a key member of the team. But the show is known for its creative and original stories, and Season 2 of Matlock is starting to give a good reason for Billy’s absence.
How Matlock Explains David Del Rio’s Exit As Billy Martinez
The show “Collateral” creates some mystery around Billy’s disappearance. At the start of the episode, Madeline mentions he’s taking time off. Later, Sarah tells Gwen Easton, a representative from Lamar and Olson, that Billy is ill and they are helping to cover for him, which provides a potential explanation for his absence.
Now that Gwen Easton, whom Sarah jokingly calls “Layoff Barbie” on Slack, is assessing staff before the law firms merge, a plan is taking shape. Later, Easton lets Sarah know that Olympia’s team doesn’t actually need another person, and asks if either Sarah or she would be interested in a substantial severance package.
Neither Sarah nor Madeline wanted to leave Jacobson Moore, but Billy was able to accept a buyout offer. This came after Matlock revealed that Martinez’s girlfriend was pregnant, although she recently had a miscarriage on the show. Billy might use the money as a chance to recover, and although Gwen says she doesn’t plan to fire anyone, Sarah suspects bigger changes are coming.
Though the show hasn’t explained how Billy left, the storyline has moved forward without him, and Martinez’s story is no longer part of the plot. Meanwhile, Sarah is working to rejoin Olympia’s team and unexpectedly finds herself paired with Julian again after admitting she photographed his date book for Senior.
Even if Sarah was always meant to leave, the way Matlock handles her departure feels genuine. Billy’s exit isn’t rushed or glossed over; it’s woven into the story in a way that respects the other characters and showcases Matlock’s talent for complex and detailed storytelling.
As Season 2 of Matlock progresses, Billy being away and Sarah working with Julian will noticeably change the show’s feel during an important period. With Billy and Sarah less present, their connection – often considered the strongest part of the series – will have more opportunity to develop.
