Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder once discussed the possibility of including Christian Bale’s Batman from Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), specifically in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ultimately, the idea didn’t move forward. Snyder recently shared that they would have seriously explored this option if The Dark Knight Rises had a different ending.
The Dark Knight Rises’ ending stopped Zack Snyder from casting Christian Bale as Batman
The director of Rebel Moon recently discussed the 10-year anniversary of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in a new interview.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz brought up a past conversation with director Zack Snyder. Snyder recalled that he and Christopher Nolan had previously talked about linking Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to the DC Extended Universe. They even considered bringing Christian Bale back as Batman for the film Batman v Superman, but ultimately decided against it.
According to Snyder, if The Dark Knight Rises had concluded with Batman continuing to fight crime instead of retiring to Italy with Catwoman, it could have opened the door to merging the universes of the Batman and DC Extended Universe films. He believes that seeing Christian Bale’s Batman still actively protecting Gotham at the film’s end – rather than enjoying retirement – would have made a crossover much more plausible.
The director of Watchmen also wondered if Christopher Nolan had been interested, he would have approached the project in a different way. However, Snyder admitted he wasn’t sure, and the two filmmakers never actually talked about it.
Zack Snyder previously mentioned on the podcast that the ending of The Dark Knight Rises – specifically, when John Blake takes over as Batman – was a key reason why his idea didn’t move forward.
The director admitted that using Bruce Wayne’s Batman in a fight with Superman was what fans expected, and changing that would have created problems. Still, he thought it would have been interesting to see the newer Batman, played by Blake, battle Superman instead (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
