When a TV show’s release is suddenly delayed right before it’s supposed to air, the actors and creators usually have something to say about it. That’s what happened with Jessica Chastain and her new Apple TV+ series, The Savant. Chastain, who also helped produce the show, publicly disagreed with Apple’s decision to postpone its release, which was originally scheduled for September 26th. The Savant is a drama, based on a true story reported by Cosmopolitan, where Chastain plays a character who goes undercover in online white supremacist groups to try and stop violent attacks. Currently, there’s no new date for when the show will be released.
Chastain argued that the show remains important today, especially considering the recent increase in political violence over the past five years. She cited events like the January 6th attack, attempts on President Trump’s life, the shooting of Democratic representatives in Minnesota, and an assassination attempt on Charlie Kirk as examples.
I’ve been thinking a lot about recent events, and while these incidents don’t represent *all* the violence we see in this country, they really point to a dangerous way of thinking that exists across the political landscape – something we absolutely need to address. I’ve always believed in tackling tough subjects, and honestly, I wish my show, *The Savant*, wasn’t so timely. It’s about the everyday heroes who work tirelessly to *prevent* violence, and right now, celebrating their bravery feels more important than ever.
The delay of the show *The Savant* comes at a sensitive time for political discussion in the US. Following the death of Kirk, several media personalities – including Karen Attiah of the Washington Post and Matthew Dowd of NBC – lost their jobs. Recently, *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* was temporarily taken off the air and its host suspended, though he was later reinstated. Major entertainment companies like Disney and Paramount have also faced and settled costly lawsuits brought by Trump, with payments exceeding $15 million. Just last week, a $5 billion lawsuit Trump filed against the New York Times was dismissed. Given this climate, it’s understandable that Apple TV+, which is about to release a show dealing with controversial political issues and white supremacy, might be hesitant to move forward, especially if it wants to avoid trouble with Trump on social media or regarding future trade policies. Apple TV+ has only confirmed the postponement of *The Savant* and hasn’t offered any further explanation.
Chastain expressed her appreciation for her Apple colleagues and stated she’s optimistic the project will be available shortly. Here’s her complete statement:
